Profession / Perform / Craft & Time

Rules Questions

New-ish GM here.

Little unsure about how to make money using Profession/Perform/Craft. I understand the rule on a technical level, just wondering on a role-play level. If a single check represent a week's worth of time, how exactly does this get played out?

For instance, it's the start of the adventure and things are going on a day-to-day basis. Does the player have to commit sometime in the village "working" each day, and them make a craft check at the end of the week? Or do they go ahead and make the craft check, assume they spent some time each day in the village "working", and then make another check each week?

Just not sure how this is properly incorporated into gameplay. I bet there are several takes on it. Anyone have advice?

bump?

I suppose it depends on what sort of roll they're attempting. Many craft checks can be done on the spot, as long as tools and raw materials are available. Fletching, for example, is relatively simple. Even smithing can be done in a pit forge dug in the ground, as long as you have a half-decent tools.

Profession and Perform, though, require some time in a populated area. If the players are in town and have time time to spare, they can spend their day making a roll to earn a little cash. A performer might sing or juggle in the street, essentially panhandling, or perhaps they can secure a gig playing at a local tavern. A professional might find temporary employment, or sell their services freelance, depending on the profession.

If all they have is a day or two, they'll have to make rolls by the day, usually at the end of the day. (Or you could have them roll first, then decide together how the day winds up achieving those results, good or bad.)

Sadly, these skills do not scale well with the sort of money that characters tend to deal with beyond even the lowest levels. Making a few gold for a day's work is nothing compared to hauling back thousands of gold pieces worth of swag and rewards from a few days of adventuring.
