What Spells I Can Cast

I'm making a magic using character and I was wondering, at first level, my character can't cast 2nd level spells, however, he has a big enough modifier to let him cast bonus spells. Do the bonus spells allow me to cast 2nd level spells?

No, you don't get those bonus spell slots until you are high enough level to cast 2nd level spells. Right now they do nothing for you.

Look at the chart more closely ... it doesn't have zeroes for higher level spell slots, it has '-'. You can't add anything to '-'.

...so a first level caster with 14 Int would have -1 2nd level spells? What does that mean?
