Head Towards the Light! ...Or don't, whichever!

Advice

So I had a character recently (half-elf monkadin/Champion or Irori) get croaked by an umbral dragon breath weapon, then brought back to life on the spot. This got me to wondering what exactly he experienced for the brief time that he met the Enlightened One.

Is there any written resources for this sort of thing, or does anyone have experience roleplaying this kind of situation, or does everyone mostly just get back up and dive right back into the dungeon like nothing happened?

It's up to you and your DM, but I imagine in 6 seconds your soul hasn't made it to an upper (or lower) plane yet, that's how Breath of Life works.

Even then it's unlikely you get to meet the God as soon as you die (even if you are his biggest fan).

But of course, you totally could.

You might have a brief memory of being in the Boneyard, waiting in a VERY long line to see Pharasma.

I believe the standard is you have to wait in line for Pharasma's judgement to get sent on to your appropriate plane. Whereupon you become a petitioner. Of course, then the petitioner says this:

Quote:

Petitioners are the souls of mortals brought to the Outer Planes after death in order to experience their ultimate punishment, reward, or fate. A petitioner retains fragments of its memories from life, and its appearance depends not only upon the shape it held in life but also upon the nature of the Outer Plane to which it has come. The stat block detailed above presents a typical petitioner formed from the soul of an average human—it does not include any of the plane-specific abilities or features a petitioner gains, and should be modified as appropriate depending on the plane to which the petitioner is assigned.

Creatures who die, become petitioners, and then return to life retain no memories of the time they spent as petitioners in the afterlife. A petitioner who dies is gone forever—its “life force” has either returned to the Positive Energy Plane or, in some cases, provided the energy to trigger the creation of another outsider. Petitioners who please a deity or another powerful outsider can be granted rewards—the most common such reward manifests as a transformation into a different outsider, such as an archon, azata, demon, or devil, depending upon the petitioner's alignment. In rare cases, a creature can retain its personality from life all the way through its existence as a petitioner and into its third “life” as an outsider, although such events are rare indeed.

So, according to this. You don't remember s~&# about what happened to you after your death.

And as Imbicatus said, if you aren't a petitioner yet you might remember waiting in line for judgement. But that would be about it.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Maybe he has faint memories of giants wearing strange clothes, holding strange boulders with arcane runes, sitting around a table...

I usually figure time moves differently on other planes. In 2E when -10 meant dead... I had a -9 character get healed and be kind of freaked out cause he 'saw his father' who had been dead for years :P

Serpent Skull I had someone waiting in line for a while before coming back...

If the player doesn't want to come back, or the time limit is expired... then he's already been judged and moved on.

ORRRRRRR

he wakes up with no memory and doesn't beleive that he actually 'died'.

Honestly death is a WONDERFUL RP moment and i wouldn't WANT the rules to nail TOOOO much down. Have fun with it :D

Well this is assuming life in death (weird statement I know) happens in real time so to speak,

It could be minutes.after he died he.came back in the mortal world but he could have experienced a decades or even centuries of time in the 'underworld '

So your character could play it as:
Scarred randomly remembering bad things
Scared cautious not wanting to go.back
Angry maybe your God was rewarding you for your deeds and they interrupted you
Carefree/careless to be used with angry wanting to go back
Dedicated, this one could go.different ways, maybe want to keep up good work to impress 'boss ' or dedicated to find a way back to his arms so to.speak since you know.you.can't just off the char

I think could be great rp potential here I'd talk to GM maybe he can use some ideas for future plot hooks

Edit: ninja'd due to being in mountains lol.no service :( lol
