Getting my wife interested in gaming

Advice

So I was just wondering if any one had any ideas on how to get my wife to game with my group?

Sovereign Court

Need more info. If she isnt into fantasy or games its going to be a difficult sell.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ask her?

Are you sure you want that? I often find that, in a relationship, it's nice to have a separate hobby. Besides, doesn't everyone have a story about the dm's bf/gf who's just filling space? Those stories usually aren't about how well they contributed to the party.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not implying our hobby is some misogynistic boys only poker night: I got into d&d because that's what all the girls in my college played. My first real gf I met as a halfling rogue. On the other hand, when we broke up, I lost my gaming group. And I didnt get another for years.
I've also had friends who all but dragged their sweetie to the gaming table. I mean we got along, they tried and so did we, but they never meshed because they didn't want to.
The moral of this story: When I get married, I'm putting a well balanced party of adventurers in my prenup, and so should you.

Silver Crusade

She may or may not ever want to try it. I think stereotypically, women are interested in the role-playing or theatrical aspects of the game. On the other hand, my wife tried pathfinder once and thought that the roleplaying aspects were just too wierd. She's much more comfortable with board games like Descent. If your wife is interested in board games, starting out with a boardgame like Descent (most likely 2nd edition--the first edition is out of print and rather expensive) might be a way to gauge her interest and introduce her to some of the concepts.

Scarab Sages

My husband and I game together all the time. But we like many of the same things. If the OP and his wife don't enjoy many shared interests, it may be difficult to find common ground for enjoyment of roleplaying.

It's also important to find a group of fellow players she will feel comfortable with. Does your wife already know any of the members of the group? Does she like them? If they are strangers, or if she knows them but doesn't feel comfortable around them, that's another roadblock to getting her involved in roleplaying.

If your wife shares your interests and is comfortable with your group, then maybe you can persuade them to have an introductory one-shot so your wife can play a session and see if she likes it. But don't try to pressure her into it. If she doesn't want to try it, she doesn't want to.
