Title says it all, should one make a gunslinger(pistoler)2/inquisitor 18 for optimization or gunslinger(pistoler)5/inquisitor 15?
Not sure of which archetype for the inquisitor, maybe preacher?
I do not really know which one would be better, I'll put info that I understand for and against each one.
the 2/18 build:
Pro's:
- Faster Bane for inquisitor.
- Faster Judgements.
- Faster spell progress and all other inquisitory things.
- More skill points, etc.
- Maybe better utility?
Con's:
- Smaller BAB
- No dex bonus to dmg
- Smaller health
-------------
the 5/15 build:
Pro's:
- Dex bonus to dmg at level 5
- Larger BAB
- More health
- Up close and deadly is better 2d6 vs 1d6.
Con's:
- Slower Bane
- Less skills
- Slower inquisitor progression.
Neither gains the deadeye deed, unless some feat helps in that?
So that's max 40 feet range for touch ac attacks on pistols, if you have distance weapon or something that get's you the double range on pistols.
Things I know about the campaign, firearms will be very rare, literally like almost no one has gunpowder or weapons. Except the inquisition naturally.
Could someone wise in the ways of either class help me and explain more to me what gains are in either side?
Thank you :)

I actually suggest going Pistolero 5 / Shieldmarshal 9 / Pistolero 6
Shieldmarshal is a PrC for gun-wielding characters that gives access to judgments similar to the Inquisitor's. It also lets you gain deeds as a gunslinger half of your Shieldmarshal lvls. With 11 lvls of Pistolero you can have as a capstone Signature Deed (Up Close and Deadly).
Otherwise, Pistolero 5 / Inquisitor 15 is probably a better build. Dex to damage is important.
Also at lvl 1 pistoleros do not have such big gains like musket master (with rapid reload) and mysterious stranger (with cha to damage) have.

Seems like a good prc, but only downsides I see is the lack of bane and spellcasting, but the deeds advancement is great also all the ranger bonuses and such.
But do you have any dpr comparison on the two? or even on the shield marshal build alone. Or any feat selections on level progressions.
Thanks!

One issue I noticed with the Shield Marshal PRC is that you need proficiency with at least two firearms, so you cannot go pistoler or musket master with shield marshal unless you spend one feat to gain proficiency with another firearm.

Or might musket master be actually a better choice for the gunslinger/inquisitor? I actually like at least the picture in my mind more ^^, some inquisitor from wh40k had a nice old school looking rifle.

Pistolero can take shieldmarshal, as there exist more than one one-handed firearm (same with Musket-Master, but replace one-handed with two-handed)

Ah, my mistake then, it seems I misunderstood the requirements.
Thanks for clarifying.

I would actually recommend not going any more than 12 levels of inquisitor to get Greater Bane. Depending on how your DM reads the Bane Baldric interaction with Bane/Greater Bane, 8 levels of inquisitor may suffice. 8 levels of inquisitor gets you 3 uses of judgement per day with 2 judgements active each time you activate them. 12 levels of inquisitor get you 2 more teamwork feats (which is nice) and Stalwart (which is VERY nice), so that may be the better route to take.

I just found that if you buy an Incandescent blue sphere in a wayfinder you can have Blind-FIght for free. This means that if you buy this at 5 lvl, you can qualify for the Ricochet Shot Deed at 5th lvl instead of the quickdraw (it is there as a filler mostly). If you do not have enough money by 5th lvl, swap the richochet shot deed with combat reflexes at 9th lvl.
Also, the advice of not goinf more than 12 lvls of Inquisitor is solid, as this way you can take 3 lvls of weapon master fighetr for weapon training. Stack it with goles of dueling for +3/+3 at attack and damage rolls. Alterantively trench fighter will end up giving you double dex to damage, but it is probably cheesy and you should avoid it.
Here it is modified with the weapon master dip.

I like this build more than the others. You can have pretty early both the snap shot feat tree (which is awesome) and the deft shootist deed for avoiding AoOs.
Granted though, the shieldmarshal with the signature deed (up close and deadly) at 19th lvl wreaks havoc. It is tempting if you will start at high lvl and you intend to play all the way to 20.

I like the build too, but would it also work if one took level 17-20 the fighter levels instead of inquisitor? I think powerwise it's weaker but the end result is the same and it's just for flavor's sake in my mind.
Would it work?
| XMorsX |
It works, but the feat progression is worse. The 3 lvls of fighter really fix the feat issue, allowing you to both be able to threaten 10 feet around you and make AoOs earlier, as well as not taking AoOs when shooting at melee.

You could always forgo taking Gunslinger and just take 3 levels of Trench Fighter instead. You'd lose Deeds, Nimble, and Up Close and Deadly this way, but in exchange you'd get Dex to damage, an AC bonus when behind cover, and extra feats.

If Trench fighter is a choice, it becomes sick. Five lvls of Pistolero / Musket Master + 4 lvls of Trench Fighter for double Dex to damage and many feats. BUT, it comes form a campaign with Guns Everywhere. Unless these conditions exist in OP's campaign too, I believe that it should be avoided.
