Clerics without a deity

Shadow Lodge 4/5

I know I've seen something somewhere that answers this question, but for the life of me I can't find it. Are PFS clerics required to worship a deity, or can they be a cleric of a "concept?"

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Its in the Guide. You must pick a Deity.

Not just clerics, but paladins, cavaliers of the star(?), and inquisitors. Oracle and the nature casters get away without a deity though. PFS houserules.

Hint: Try using the search function. It took me all of 15 seconds to find that by searching the file for the word "deity."

I actually had this question come up a couple of weeks back about oracles. Here is the full text:

"Religion: Characters can elect to worship any deity listed in a table of gods in the Core Rulebook, The Inner Sea World Guide, Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Gods and Magic, or any other source listed as an official Additional Resource. Characters may elect to worship an evil god, but must always be within one alignment step of their chosen deity. For clerics, this is an especially important choice, since the deity’s alignment determines whether the cleric channels positive or negative energy, a decision with significant tactical implications for the cleric and her allies. Clerics, inquisitors, paladins, cavaliers of the order of the star, and samurai of the order of the star must choose a deity as all classes in Golarion that receive spells and abilities from a specific divine source receive their powers from a deity. Druids, oracles, and rangers are the exception to this rule. The list is not exhaustive, and divine spellcasters of any future classes whose sources are added as additional resources will be required to choose a deity unless otherwise specified. Otherwise, characters who do not receive powers from a divine source may choose to be atheists or to have no deity at all."

Though this is interesting. For everyone else, you can be a worshipper of Iomadae, and be chaotic neutral, but you have to be Lawful Neutral to worship Asmodeus.

Or just imagine a Lawful Neutral character who worships Caiden Caylean. Just the stuck-up law-abiding guy with the wish to have a really freakin' good party one day...but...not now.
Or...
"I worship Asmodeus!"
"But...you are a barbarian."
"Yeah!"
"And you always do what's right."
"Yeah!"
"And...you NEVER follow the law."
"Yeah!"
"I mean, we were in this one country where hunting was forbidden and you wanted to hunt, then we were in this OTHER country where hunting is a sport and you hated the thought."
"Yeah!"
"...so, WHY?"
"Well, obviously, there has to be some kind of order. I would by unemployed without some laws to break!"

You must be within one alignment step of your deity. They are reiterating it for evil deities, because you can not be evil, though your hod may be.

That's not what that says. Yes, the sentence is poorly constructed--and this has been pointed out several times, though it remains unfixed--but its meaning is not actually particularly ambiguous.
