I am the Baroness in the Kingmaker campaign (female Paladin). We have just reached 7th level and I have been given the OK to create a cohort (following the rules for creating an NPC according to the core rulebook (p. 448). The cohort will be level 5 and will support crafting of magical items, but will also roam with the adventuring group from time to time.
While I originally planned for the Cohort to be a wizard, I do know that other classes now can craft magical items, but will admit that I have not fully read the crafting rules concerning this.
Thus my question to the PF community is what cohort I could create that would be more fun than the stereotypical NPC crafting wizard. I have access to all rulebooks and classes. I am restricting myself to the cohort to be male as well as human, elf, or half-orc (due to my backstory). This cohort is very likely to become co-ruler, so CHA is of importance.
Feel free to break out any character concept, vague or in detail. :)

I know somewhere on the boards there was somebody trying to build the most charismatic character ever. Ended up with a bard that could replace most int based skills with Charisma. I'm sorry I don't remember the thread but it was recent. It relied on Pageant of the Peacock to bluff the universe into believing it was a good craftsman.

The arcanist is a new class the advanced class guide. Its not out yet, but you can find it in the play test and its PFS legal. They're a mix between wizard and sorcerer and they get "exploits" to do cool stuff. One exploit is a free craft feat, but I can't remember if you can take it multiple times.

Any spell caster can craft if they take the feats. Wizards and Clerics are slightly better, since they have access to the most spells the quickest, but even without meeting prerequisites the DCs are not very hard. Sorcerer, Oracle, Bard, Arcanist, even a Paladin can be decent crafters with a high charisma.
Spending the feats to craft, and the skill ranks to ensure a high spell craft, will cut down on combat effectiveness so depending on how much you need to rely on them that can make some choices better or worse. Also if you are looking for wands and scrolls to be crafted, the crafter does have to have the spell in that case.
A bard would probably be a strong choice if you aren't looking for wands and scrolls, since he even though he won't be all that great in combat he can buff the rest of you. Cleric would be a very strong choice, go for 14+ charisma, which will help his channel energy anyway, and even if he doesn't do a lot to kill the bad guys everyone always likes having a cleric along.

If you're looking for someone to be some use when you go adventuring but not overshadow players and still craft perhaps a Life Oracle might work, lets you all focus on the fun part of killing enemies and such and he keeps you healed up after fights? Cha as a casting stat means that gets a strong focus (and hugely helps UMD if needed for meeting crafting requirements) and you can spend all the feats on crafting, revelations give plenty of flavour for spellcasting.

So clerics and wizards (and perhaps witches) are better suited for crafters if you want to make wands, scrolls and potions.
Spontaneous casters can make Rods, Wondrous, Rings, Armor & Weapons, and Staves, but they increasingly difficult spellcraft roles if they lack the proper spells.
Here is something I sketched up: a barbarian prince and priest of Erastil, and his holy animal guide Blackfeather. NPC, elite array, with NPC heroic wealth (although he does have several items he's crafted for half price). His companion is especially fun: as an Totem Guide, he can use it to spontaneously cast various divination type spells, helpful if the PC's need some quick information/divination. The eagle can also do mundane type reconnaissance. Next level it can speak with Barek, and it has a 3 int so can be fairly useful as a scout.
With the feather and good (archon) domains, as he levels he will be an increasingly good buffer/debuffer with fly spells, aura of menace, and touch of good.
