Keeping track of enemies during combat

Advice

I've been having trouble keeping track of who's who during combat. On the combat grid, I use coins to represent the enemies. Different coins equal a different type of enemy. However, when I have multiple similar enemies represented by the same coin, I often lose track of who's who. Any advice on alternate methods or improvements I can use?

Dice, they're nicely numbered for you and you can still use different kinds of dice for different kinds of enemies

I use small six sided dice on the coins. The number on top is different for each monster. If i have more than 1 type of monster, I use different colors.

Of course this leads to statements of "I attack red 2!!" but it works for us.

If you have a bunch of figurines of the same type, use a dab of white paint on their base, then number them with a sharpie. This helps a lot in the games I GM.

Lantern Lodge

I put a small circular sticker on the base and number. Can be easily removed.

Dice work. Or even little paper disks with numbers written on them in pen.

I use tokens, but not just bought ones. (In other words, I shrink images to the right size, print them out in black and white, and then number them in pen.)

Sovereign Court

Great ideas mentioned by the good folks here so far. For a different direction you could look at the Pawn selections from paizo if you are willing to make an investment. They have images and numbers listed on each pawn and are really easy to use. The Bestiary box has gone a long way at my table.

get a strip of veneer 1 inch wide, cut it at 1 inch and pen on a nme and a number if there are multiples. heavier than card paper, contrasts nicely with white 1 inch chart paper maps. my buddy richard uses little wooden shapes to represent monsters and has them numbered he just notes that the wood piles are goblins, the sheep are orcs and the wheat sheafs are ogres,,, or whatever.

Thanks for the help guys. These ideas seem so obvious now. Will implement immediately!
