How much Intelligence does a wizard really need?

I'd start with 14 and rely on a headband to get you to 16. If you're going to be melee focused you've probably got a higher stat you will want to spend the ability increase on.

If you want to roll those dice, why not start with a 12 and assume you can get a +4 item?

Well I'm fairly certain casting will be the primary source of contribution at low levels before polymorph.

So for what OP ask I would go for a human

15str 14dex 14con 16int* 10wis 8cha

*has the racial bonus

Then I would but leveling points into str.

Now a more min/max array would be
Dwarf
15str 14dex 14con* 16int 10wiz* 6cha*

A squishier array would be
Elf
16str 16dex* 12con* 16int* 9wis 7cha

It's the tactic most any wizard guide will give by direct prescription or insinuation.

Also, as I said, PFS is moving beyond level 11 last I heard. My advice is sound.

Lastly, while a valid choice, it's hard to think of a wizard that subsists entirely on personal range spells or self-targeting transmutations. Being half-BAB and lowers HP will hurt a lot if you plan on hulking out and going on the offensive. To ignore spells DCs entirely is a gamble to say the least. He'd do much better to actually play a druid.

Well that is a given. The class was built around this idea san the arcane element. Then additional features were poured all over the class for extra fun. Then you have what can be the arguable BEST spell list in the game.

A transmuting eldritch knight is awesome. He doesn't need to be a Druid.

If you don't plan on throwing spells that require saving throws (and you're willing to spend money on pearls of power for bonus spells) you won't need much Int. At level 11 you'll be casting 6th level spells, so you'll need an Int of 16. If you plan to put your 4th and 8th level points into intelligence, you could therefore have a starting intelligence of 14; if you are willing to assume you can get a headband of Intelligence, you could even start lower.

This.

You can certainly ride along with a lower int if you aren't worried about spell DCs. It is a pretty common way to go if you plan on being a melee wizard, (which yes can be a thing).

It is hard for some, however, to see how someone would do this... because a full-blooded spell-focused wizard is probably the best class in the game. Personally, I prefer doing it with a dragon disciple, but that's just me.

How much Int does a wizard need?

Depends on if you're trying to "win" at Pathfinder.

Somehow missed the transmuter/buffing part. Sounds like a melee alchemist, kind of. Don't need much int for that.

First of all, thanks for all the input. From what I've gleaned here I've got a pretty good starting point if I go with 14 INT at creation. And, by virtue of the way stat buys actually turn out, I'm now weighing the following options:

F Elf Wizard (Thassilonian Transmuter (Enhancement)*) 1
*Because even planning to be a shapechanger, the shapechanger subschool is bad.

{{A}}
STR 15 (+1) from Transmutation School
DEX 14
CON 14
INT 15
WIS 12
CHA 7

{{B}}
STR 15 (+1) from Transmutation School
DEX 14 OR
CON 15 (+1) from Transmutation School
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA 7

{{C}}
STR 15 (+1) from Transmutation School
DEX 13 OR
CON 15 (+1) from Transmutation School
INT 15
WIS 10
CHA 7

{{D}}

DEX 12 OR
CON 15 (+1) from Transmutation School
INT 14
WIS 12

{{E}}

You seem to be misinformed about PFS. Assuming he can get to 12th, there are sanctioned modules he can play. However, it is only enough to advance one or two characters.
