The Doctor sourcebooks

Heya folks was looking at the Doctor source books for adventures in time and space RPG. Anyone pick one of these up or got a few words to say on them?

I've looked at few and I've picked up the Time Travler's Companion.

The production quality is excellent and they cover their subjects impressively for roleplaying use. In fact I'd consider the TTC an essential add-on. (among other things it heavily relaxes the One-Timelord decree of the original book, giving a lot of material for generating your own Time Lord or running the game with out one or a TARDIS.

TARDIS creation is extensively covered giving broad guidelines for TARDIS models 1-100.

Thanks Lazarx. Unfortunately, I don't many chances to run the system. I was thinking the doctor source books if anything would be really nice to have on my book shelf for reading on a day off or whatever.

The Doctor Sourcebooks are worth it for non-game reading as well, yes. They go into great detail about not only the era's stories, but also their style (to assist in running campaigns along those lines). Plus, they're beautifully designed. I definitely recommend them for fans.

Note, while the First and Second sourcebooks are in PDF and print, the Third is only in PDF at this time. (We're supposed to get sourcebooks for the first eleven eventually, but it could be a while before they finish.)

Interesting that the Third Doctor sourcebook is in PDF. I just checked to see if Amazon had an updated release for that book (it had previously been late December) but now they just show it as unavailable with no description to speak of. What the heck? I hope they aren't cancelling this line.

I like the product quality for the Cubicle 7 books but man it's like they are always behind on releases and the print things they do release become really hard to find really fast. That said the limited edition rulebook that is supposed to release this year is high on my list and I still want to get Time Traveler's Companion.

Relative to the sourcebooks for the first two Doctors, I like them a lot with detail on all of the episodes. The first one in particular is nice with a consolidated index with stat blocks for the first Doctor and all of his companions. I don't think they organized it quite the same in the second Doctor's book.

They're still going ahead with them (I was just informed the Third Doctor book is about to arrive in their US warehouse, and their forums show news of a printing error that meant it got pushed back from December), but it does appear there's some kind of distribution hold-up between them and Amazon, I've noticed it with other things they publish too. Everything is available from their own webstore directly (and you get the PDF thrown in too if you buy from there!), and via hobby distribution channels, it could just be they don't have a viable book trade channel.

They're a relatively small company so they do seem susceptible to delays with releases. They've got some fantastic writers though, and I really love DWAITAS.

The good news is they've apparently got up to the eighth Doctor now with the sourcebooks as far as the writing goes, they're just all in a big queue to get edited/approved/printed/released.

Shadow Lodge

The Eighth Doctor sourcepamphlet couldn't have taken too long to write.

Heh, yeah. They said they were going to pad that book out with a giant adventure, I believe (there was some demand for including the audio plays, but they don't have the rights for Big Finish material)

Shadow Lodge

They should also throw in the War Doctor with that one.

There were quite a few novels written about the Eight Doctor's adventures as I recall. I only read a few of them myself. I'm not sure if these overlapped at all with the Big Finish material but they might be able to reference some of those stories.

That'd certainly make sense. I recall mumblings on the forums about whether he gets put in with the eighth, ninth, and/or in the upcoming limited edition anniversary rulebook (which I'm really looking forward to, if only because I don't really like the boxed softcover books for long-term durability,) but the eighth would make the most sense to me with all the space that'll need filling.

The books directly published by BBC Books could be a possibility I guess. I know they've said anything produced under license (Big Finish, Virgin Books, etc) is out of the scope of their own license with the BBC.

I hope the limited edition rulebook has stats/notes for all 12 Doctors plus the War Doctor. I also hope it is readily available through most game channels and not a case where if you don't manage to buy it the week it hits the street you'll never get it.

13 Doctors. You are forgetting the Metacrisis Doctor which used up a Regeneration as well.

Shadow Lodge

Meh, he doesn't need a book. He's just Ten without a TARDIS, and saddled with Rose until he snaps, strangles her to death, and his brain melts.

Which hopefully happened as soon as he was off the camera.

He was given a piece of the TARDIS which would eventually become his own TARDIS.

Plus I was talking about the Stats not his own book. Read the post before mine.

Shadow Lodge

Bah, his brain would melt long before that chunk of TARDIS becomes a viable vehicle.

"Coming soon" announcement for the fourth Doctor sourcebook.

I have the PDF of the 4th Doctor Book (early subscriber version) and it looks lovely. I have only skimmed it but its a biggie 256 pages and has loads of pics of the adventures and even includes a write up for Shada in the Appendix (as it was never completed or aired).

Am incredibly jealous, as I was too late to get in on the early subscriber deal. Fingers crossed the preorder with PDF will be available soon, then!

AFAIK, the only thing Hand Doctor took with him, was a copy of Ten's jacket.

Cant wait for 4th doctor book to hit U.S. Its the one must have book for me!

They filmed Ten handing him a piece of TARDIS coral at the end. However, they deleted that part of the scene and it wasn't broadcast, so it's not really canon (cue uncontrollable laughter by anyone seeing me using the word "canon" within ten light years of a Doctor Who topic.)

If he really did have a piece of coral, then as far as I know it'd take far longer than his now human lifespan to grow into anything remotely usable, although I guess there would be nothing stopping him putting a note on it asking whichever descendant got it to send it back to him once it's fully grown, or something... but now we're entering way too far into conjectural territory.

I have to admit to a feeling of dread that the license could possibly expire (or any one of a number of other problems occur) before they get around to completing the lot. I really want that complete set of books - and not just to complete the picture on the spines! :)

Can i ask how you are handling adventures? More puzzle and less combat. Is the tardis just a place to randomly place the PC's

Mine are going to be very much RP-heavy puzzle/negotation/troubleshooting adventures, with combat mostly being something the NPCs get up to between themselves other than when the group tries to escape from being held captive or something similar.

The plan is that sometimes the TARDIS gets dragged off-course for a preplanned adventure, sometimes I'll check with the group at the end of an adventure and we'll discuss ideas for where (or when!) to head next, giving me time to plan out the next adventure around that idea (we play a number of games in rotation so the end of a DWAITAS adventure will mean I get a good few weeks before the next one begins)

I just ordered the print copy of Time Traveller's Companion which should be here tomorrow. Looking forward to the print edition of the 4th Doctor sourcebook and the Limited Edition core book when they hit the streets here in the US.

Question to others who have the print copy of the 3rd Doctor sourcebook: does the spine of your book look different than 1st and 2nd where instead of the top of the spine being mostly blank (the picture of the Doctor is near the bottom) there's a cutoff portion of the Doctor Who logo like the one from the cover? At first I thought they might be doing something so that if you line all of the sourcebooks for the Doctors in order you'd see the logo on the side but I'm thinking it's just a printing error.

The 3rd Doctor spine is actually the correct one, the 2nd Doctor book should have had a partial logo, but the printer thought it was a glitch and blacked it out without permission thinking they were fixing it :)

Cubicle 7 have said they'll replace all the 2nd Doctor books with properly printed ones, for anyone who wants the logo sections to line up as intended (keep an eye on there for an announcement when they have the new copies in.)

Here's how they're intended to line up.

I'm in the US.

While I'm not Legendarius, I'm going to point out I get my own DWAITAS books from Cubicle 7's own webstore (http://shop.cubicle7store.com/) which has the advantage of also getting you a free PDF copy through DTRPG (note that the download codes are emailed manually so you often have to wait until the next weekday morning). The books are printed in the US, and should be shipped to you from the US warehouse so you shouldn't have to wait for them to come from their HQ in the UK. If it defaults to showing UK£ prices, you can toggle to US$ with an option on the right.

While the free PDFs are nice, the main reasons I get mine there is that I have trouble finding anyone else carrying the full range of books, plus if it's a preorder you do get the PDF copy in advance of the book being printed.

Wow!! Thanks a million!! The exact reason I've hesitated purchasing from their web store is because I thought the books would be printed and shipped from the UK. I was afraid of an increased chance of a book being lost or damaged in transit to the US.

Again, many thanks!!

You're welcome :)

I'm actually in the UK myself, but every time they announce something we preordered is ready to ship, they tell us the US customers will get them first due to them arriving there from the printers first, and the UK having to wait a few extra days for a shipment from the US warehouse to arrive at the UK warehouse :)

I've also run into an occasion a product has shown "in stock" on the store, just to be told they were only in stock at the US warehouse (although, luckily, they had a couple of spares in the office and shipped me one from there, C7 customer service is really cool with things like that!)

Cool, I'll have to check out the details when I can get to the site. I'm hesitant to return my perfectly functional/great condition one for fear of replacement delays issues but it would be nice to have them line up nice on the shelf.

Assuming the line goes that long, will there be an 11th Doctor sourcebook? I've seen where there will be some 11th Doctor campaign guide or the like? What about 9 and 10? A little confused over the planned products for the game.

Here is the planned 11 doctor set
