GM Discussion - JR - Player's Knowledge at the start

Jade Regent

I am reading through JR and getting geared up to kick off our new campaign .. having nearly finished Kingmaker. I am definitely tweaking the story - making the PCs decendents of the families and will somehow have to workout who is heir.

My question to you is....how much knowledge would it make sense for the players to have a the beginning of JR?

Should they know of Mankai?
Should they know of Oni?
Jade Regent?
Other specifics about the land in which they may be heading?

Thanks everyone.

I usually give the players the describing paragraph of the AP (i.e. the first paragraph here) along with the Player's Guide. In the case of Jade Regent this gave them knowledge of Minkai, that oni are involved somehow, and that the AP involves a journey from Varisia to Tian-Xia via Crown of the World among other things. My philosophy here is this knowledge helps the players make characters with motivations that are suitable for the AP, and also doesn't create any faulty expectations what the AP is about.

They should definitely know of Minkai, but I would likely make oni the stuff of tales (like the boogeyman)... They should not know of the Jade Regent, not yet.
