Leadership?

Rules Questions

So, I built a Sorcerer/Noble Scion, and I got leadership as a bonus feat at 6th level.

The rules of leadership state that you can have a certain number of follower NPCs by level. My leadership score is 13, so by the table, I can have 10 1st level followers and one 2nd level follower.

Is there any way, by those rules, that I could have, instead of 10 1st level followers and 1 2nd level follower, say, a 6th level follower and a 5th level follower? or anything higher level than 1, I suppose?

The 'fluff' reasoning for this is that my character is an entirely socially focused sorcerer, with very little in the way of combat capability, and I was hoping to use my leadership feat to get some sort of capable bodyguard - not a flock of first level fodder.

You can't change the level of the followers (as the feat itself says, the followers aren't intended to be effective in combat).

However, you can also attract a cohort. At leadership score 13, your cohort can be up to a 9th level character (but no higher than 2 below your own character level).

Actually with the Noble Scion PrC you get:

Greater Leadership (Ex)

At 2nd level, a noble scion gains the Leadership feat as a bonus feat. He can recruit a cohort up to one level lower than himself. At 10th level, he can recruit a cohort of the same level as himself.

Servitor (Ex)

At 7th level, a noble scion gains a faithful NPC servitor of the same level as his cohort granted by the Leadership feat. This servitor can only have levels in NPC classes and comes equipped with gear appropriate for a character 1 level lower than the servitor's actual level. The servitor does not follow the noble scion as would a cohort or follower, but instead can run various errands for his master while the noble scion is adventuring, such as delivering messages or maintaining the scion's manor in his stead.

That is the part that confuses me. The way it's written, it seems to only mean that instead of being limited to a cohort 2 levels lower than you, you can have one 1 level lower than you, but the written rules of Leadership mean you can get tons of super low level people, and have no reservations for having anyone of a more reasonable level.

"recruit" seems to imply that I'd need to find him during the game session and recruit him to serve under me, not that I could just have him, since we started the game at level 8.

This isn't really related to what I'm looking for at all, since he doesn't follow you around, and is really more of an intern.

The only one that really 'follows you around' is the one two levels below you (1, or 0, with Greater Leadership).

Leadership allows you a single cohort plus followers of lesser level. Your bodyguard would be your cohort; he can be one level lower than you because of Noble Scion. If you are starting at 8th level, I would assume your GM would let you start with your cohort and followers already stat'd out...

so... you do get a single higher level cohort?

Here is the relevant information:

You get a single higher level cohort from the 'cohort' column AND the followers of the appropriate levels from the other columns. The further followers cannot be 'condensed' into more high-level cohorts unless the GM makes an exception. These followers really don't need stats and aren't intended for combat or adventuring, only the cohort is. They do whatever else you wish of them, and the level is just in case it actually ends up relevant.

Take it as written and don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Consider your Followers as primarily a downtime resource, roleplaying tool, and logistical aid. Yes, you get that single cohort who is only one level lower than your PC (until you reach Lvl 10 Noble Scion). Put your energy into that. It's plenty.
