Whats the Best Striker?

Advice

So I am a bit curious what everyones thoughts are on what the best striker is. Quick explanation on Strikers, for anyone who doesn't know, someone really good at dishing out lots of single target (or in some cases AoE damage) and who is generally squishy or an off tank at best. So some ground rules:

1) at what levels
2) using what build
3) and any known weaknesses

You don't need to go into super amounts of detail unless its a super specific build (i.e. Druid 8/Barbarian 6 for the hungry hungry hippo build, thats a super specific build with very specific feats).

Personally, I believe the "best" striker is the Bladebound Magus. Someone posted a while ago about "Nova" and how Magus don't "Nova," and they made a very apt point which is very similar to why I believe Magus' make the best strikers. Magus don't Nova because Nova implies your burning a lot of resources to spike out someone or a group. No matter how you look at it, a Level 1 spell is not a lot of resources.

Now granted, Magus take a bit to get going (they have to hit level 3) but once they do they turn into a really reliable AC tank (this is assuming you went Dex->Dervish but most people do anyway when they play Magus). They burn little recourses to spike out people, couple that with Spell Recall and (when you can afford it) a Ring of Wizardy I and it gets all kinds of nasty.

Granted, Magus hit their cap at around level 11 and don't have a really large increase past that. They also tend to get screwed when they run into something immune to Electric damage, but thats fairly rare so you don't have to worry about it to much, and if that becomes a consistent problem you can always take a 1 level dip into Admixture Wizard and boom, problem solved permanently.

Also, I can't seem to find the calculations for DPR anywhere (I know it exists but I can't find it) if someone could post that so we could have an accurate DPR that'd be great. Once I have that I'd be more than glad to post the DPR for Magus.

Magus is probably one of the best examples, of a striker, though I am not sure the 'striker' role legitimately exists in pathfinder. Usually the people who lay out single target damage can also take hits as well.

by the way the dpr equation I usually use is from the DPR olympics threads:

The damage formula is h(d+s)+tchd.

h = Chance to hit, expressed as a percentage
d = Damage per hit. Average damage is assumed.
s = Precision damage per hit (or other damage that isn't multiplied on a crit). Average damage is again assumed.
t = Chance to roll a critical threat, expressed as a percentage.
c = Critical hit bonus damage. x2 = 1, x3 = 2, x4 = 3.

for this you need a target AC which is generally 13+Average party level.

A high strength Dragon Style monk can be a pretty good striker. He can charge across difficult terrain and through allies to smack someone for 1.5xStr damage. Using Ki points can enhance his movement speed, AC or full attacks, which is great for getting into/out of tricky situations. He's got high Touch AC, move speed, and saves, meaning he can easily operate a little further away from the support characters than the tank can. Also a Dragon Ferocity flurrying monk is about as high damage as a monk can get.

Alternately, a Scout archetype Rogue or Ninja (perhaps a Spring Attack build) can be a pretty decent striker while also being a skill monkey. You won't be getting insane damage, but you'll be pretty good at skirmishing.

Oh, or if you have a lot of open ground, the Cavalier is amazing. Spirited Charge plus challenge plus lance = one really, really dead enemy. I've had a barely-optimized cavalier one-shot CR-equivalent foes in my kingmaker campaign.

Scout archetype rogue (with Spring attack) .

Magus is great also.

Liberty's Edge

Archer Rangers can be great at killing their favored enemy or anyone with Instant enemy. once they get cluster shot even DR doesn't stop them.

Archers in general make very strong strikers. The basic archery chassis works remarkably well with a wide variety of classes, too. Fighter, ranger, paladin, inquisitor, bard, and of course zen archer monk all make excellent archers. The basic concept is get as many attacks as you can and stack as many damage adds as you can on each attack.

Archer or pounce to achieve constant full attacks. Archery Ranger in particular can use instant enemy to get a +12/+12 against any target in sight+ their bond, archery fighter should have a constant +8/+10ish with his chosen weapon + weapon mastery(but the class doesn't get much else). Magus get a pseudo pounce with bladed dash.

Rogue and Monk don't tend to do so hot. Sneak attack is lots of dice rolls but not very dependable, and monks don't have that much going for them as far as moving and attacking goes and don't tend to put much oomph into their individual attacks either. Both of them lack much in the way of attack.

Not sure who is the best, personally I try to avoid putting everything into DPR.

Scarab Sages

The best Striker? Ted.

Oh yes, if you're considering archers as well your options go way up. IMO one of the most awe-inspiring gatling guns in the game is the Divine Hunter paladin. As a human you can get Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, and Point Blank Shot at level 1, and when you smite... it just gets pretty insane.

Check it out - smiting point blank level 7 Divine Hunter:

call it 20 dex, 14 str, 14 cha
feats: Point Blank, Precise, Rapid shot, Manyshot, Deadly Aim, Weapon Focus (longbow)
weapon: +1 composite longbow, enhanced by Divine Bond for another +1

Attack:
7 (BAB) + 5 (dex) + 2 (enhancement) + 1 (weapon focus) + 2 (smite) + 1 (point blank) - 2 (rapid shot) -2 (deadly aim) = +14

You get 4 arrows - two from BAB, 1 from rapid shot, and 1 from manyshot, so we're looking at
+14, +14, +14, +9

And each one deals:
1d8 + 2 (str) + 7 (smite) + 2 (enhancement) + 1 (point blank) + 4 (deadly aim) = 1d8 + 16 per arrow.

Bottom Line: +14/+14/+14/+9 arrows dealing 1d8 + 16 each and ignoring DR against your smite target. If all of them hit, that's about 82 damage total.

Holy DPS, batman!

I'll take an order of the sword cavalier any day, yes it's mounted combat and automatically makes it weird. Spirited charge for x3 damage on a mounted charge before a crit. Lvl 8 is when you really hit your stride. Also just because you can wield a lance in only one hand doesn't mean you should. With a good horse (play a human, give the horse +2 str for your bonus feat take the gendarme archetype) at lvl 8 it gets awesome. With only a +1 lance and a +2 str enhancement on a charge you get +18 to hit for 3(1d10 + 7 (Str x 1.5) + 1(enhancement) + 6 (mounts str mod) + any other bonuses I'm forgetting) totalling at 3d10+42 before challenging, with challenge add another 24 since level x3. If you crit numbers increase to x5. Paladin can do similar damage with a smite on a charge but they don't get the mounts str bonus. It's not the greatest since obviously mounted combat can be shut down by difficult terrain if your mount doesn't fly or if the area is too narrow.

Samurai Sword Saint:
-Sneak Attack equivalent
-Specialization and other fighter feats
-Challenge (dam as level or level x 1.5 if dwarf)
with a carrier ability dependent on order
-Shaken Effect

Pretty good as a striker as its all about alpha strikes and carving up a chosen foe.

Sap Master Rogue.

At 20th level, 28d6+53 non-lethal damage. Just to grab your attention.
