Initiate of the Seven Veils: What book is it in?

I need to know what book Initiate of the Seven Veils is in and I would love to hear some people's opinion of the class. I have read a bunch of negative stuff about it's balance, so I would love to hear what people here think of the class.
Thanks
FH

According to this list on wizard's website, it is in Complete Arcane.

I can't comment at all on balance, never having played it, but I do know it is reasonably popular on the Char Ops boards at Wizards, although not brokenly so (Like say, Incantrix).

My own opinion on caster prestige classes is if they don't give up at least 1 caster level (preferably at level 1), then they are probably overpowered.

Yeah it's in CA. I have played one and I enjoyed it. I usually dont multiclass as a caster because 1. they are fun and powerful on their own and 2. I've never felt any PrC wasn't worth it because you either took a casting dip or you really didn't get anything that was that special, at least without loosing casting. I feel like this class helped all that. You have full casting and a neat ability every so often.

This class is very powerful so be careful. I don't believe you play with big power gamers so you should be fine. This class has alot of flavor that can lead to alot of areas. I think you will enjoy it Just be careful.

I also changed the name to IotS Lights. I based it around a prism and 'light' magic that couldn't cast darkness or shadow based spells. I also always kept a good alignment or I couldn't use my veil or 'light' abilities. This may have been what kept my power in check.

Actually I'm under the impression that he does play with power gamers - or at least some of his players fit that description.

It looks pretty freaken potent to me. This should have cost the caster a spell level. The only significant downside is that it sucks up a couple of feats which I doubt a caster would normally pick up.

It's relatively powerful, but it's fairly well balanced due to 1) high requirements and 2) focus on defense. It makes sense for an abjurer specialist, but few other casters will find it useful. The only offensive ability (apart from some bonuses on dispel magic) is gained at 7th level (of 7).

This is also the impression I got from the PrC. Flavorwise, I can't wait to get the chance to play one as defensive/buffing wizards aren't the type I usually play and this class has so much RP potential it's almost dizzying.

Considering that you can't even start taking IotSfV your 10th character level, you have to remember...the higher the level requirements for getting into the Prestige Class, the more powerful that Prestige Class can be made.

Overall, yes, its a strong class. The Best abilities, the later colored Veils, Double Warding, Reactive Warding and Kaleidoscopic Doom are not available until a character level of 16/17 for the coolest Veils, 16th for Double Warding, 14th for Reactive Warding and 17th for Kaleidoscopic Doom.

These abilities are not overpowered for a character of those levels. The character will have traded two feats into Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus Abjuration and one in Skill Focus: Spellcraft. For a higher level caster such as this, Skill Focus in spellcraft is relatively unnecessary. The only thing about the class is it is essentially a shoe in to Archmage.

Before worrying about that though, as a DM if your PCs waits until Level 18 before taking their 1st level of Archmage, I think you have kind of won anyway. Some DMs might have a problem with the Unimpeachable Abjuration ability I suppose, but as the Initiate focuses on defense, you usually will see someone playing one start preparing less defensive spells so that they rely on this class for most of the defensive power. Overall it balances out. I know the class looks overwhelming, take a look at some other 10th level starting Prestiges then compare. Do not compare it to a level 5 start prestige. The prestige class builds work that way for a reason.
