Hey all!
I was looking through the Advanced Players Guide the other day and came across the Summoner Class. I though it might be interesting to build a 'Summoning Ranger' class rather than multi-classing.
Think; replacing the Ranger's ability to spell cast + animal companion feature with the Eidelon?
If there's anything like this out there [doubt it, tried looking, found nothing] could somebody point it out or perhaps assist me in building one?
The basic concept is already there. A Ranger that uses an Eidelon rather than an animal companion or spell casting.

Wouldn't it be easier to create a Summoner archetype that trades in its spellcasting for Ranger-like abilities; or even just swap the Summoner's spell-list and -progression for the Ranger's?
Perhaps. But I wouldn't really know. Paizo's got a Race building guide but I have yet to find one for Class building so I don't know too much about how to balance that stuff out. Which is why I'm looking for a bit of help, here. Good suggestions though. I might have to look into it.

UPDATE:
Also, I seem to be a little confused on the appearance of a Summoner's Eidelon. From what I've read, they're supposed to some sort of 'outsider' whose form varies based on the caster's desires? Yet this ability is not fine tuned enough to fully control what the Eidelon appears as.
So, just what the heck are these things supposed to look like!? It kind of makes it hard to role play and get immersed into the game world when I don't know what my Eidelon looks like and such.

Well, their shape is defined by the summoner´s conscious and subconscious. The summoner can influence how they look, but it takes a lot of self-discipline and practice to master that ability. You may want yours to look like a dragon, but it will take a lot of experience getting it right - at first it might look like a komodo dragon with a fancier head :) .

Okay. That helps. Thanks.
Although this raises yet another question. Wow this is turning more into a question forum than a Class building one, lol.
So if my Eidelon already has claws- let's say it appears to be somewhat griffon like- Technically, it already has a set of claws. Does this mean that the Eidelon uses a base Claw attack for it's size. Or do I still need to take the 'Limbs' evolution before I can take the 'Claws' evolution?

If you are doing a griffin, you'd choose the quadruped base form, which comes with 2x Limbs(legs) already, with which you can take the Claws evolution. It won't be truly griffin-like until you can take the Wings evolution at 5th, though.

Ah. Thanks again.
I've read through the Summoner about 3 times now but I just can't seem to get understand it 100%. I just get bits and pieces. I think it's just one of those abstract classes.
