How thick is a Wall of Force?

Rules Questions

In yesterdays' session we wanted to separate two iron golems by using a Wall of Force to split the room. My DM said that he would think that the Wall of Force is 5 ft. thick and this would not work when there is no space.

I always thought that a Wall of Force is a thin barrier as you know it from some sci-fi movies. The thickness of the Wall is not worded in the spell description. What do you think? What is correct?

Uh. 'Effect wall whose area is up to one 10-ft. square/level'

It has no depth, it's entirely 2D. Hence, 'area... 10-ft. square' and not 'volume... 10-ft. cube'.

Well maybe not entirely 2D, the point is that is most definitely not 5ft thick!

I believe it was Monte Cook who suggested that a wall of force be about as thick as your thumb. That way, it doesn't take up significant space on a map and can't be used as a monomolecular cutting device.

What Arakhor said. It's very thin, but not razor sharp.

Have your GM check out Wall of Stone, it has a thickness of (I think) 1 inch per 4 levels. Wall of Force isn't going to be thicker than that.

Be careful though - Iron Golems can take a wall of force down after not too long.
