Ifrit boon

Advice

Silver Crusade

So I got an Ifrit boon for GMing at a local con recently, and I'm looking for suggestions for what type of character to turn it into.

well with 2 racial classes, 2 obvious sorcerer bloodlines to pick and a affinity for anything related to fire (domains, mysteries, elemental wizard schools and even barbarian rage powers) in addition to anything related to the planes (riftwarden, summoner, etc) you are quite literally spoiled for choice.

I'd personally would go for a sorcerer. Because I'm boring like that.

Also remember, you are not necessarily bound to CHA or DEX based choices. A bonus to a dump stat means you can dump it completely with no worries, and a bonus to a secondary stat means you can get a decent score in it before the ramp up of point buy makes you spend a lot of points. This can cover a lot of the problems you might find with the penalty. So there are a lot of things you can become with those stats.

i've never seen one done before (maybe there's some kind of problem i'm not seeing), but what about a ifrit paladin? they have good stats for it (+Cha is most important for a lot of pally builds; +Dex is good for AC, init, and saves- also good if you want to 2wf with S&B, or for combat reflexes if you want to go reach; Wis is often a dump stat for pallys anyway). you could follow sarenrae and really play up her fire aspect...

something like this, maybe:
LG, Ifrit [fire starter], Paladin [sacred servant; oath of vengeance]
Str 14; Dex 14+2race; Con 12; Int 8; Wis 10-2race; Cha 16+2 race
traits: adopted-Zest for Battle; Tianjing Temple Guard
domain: fire
feats: 1- combat reflexes, 3- power attack, 5- scorching weapons, 7- inner flame, 9+ your choice...

fight with a bardiche. try to use good positioning to get as many AoOs as possible. use the best armor you can but try not to raise AC so high that enemies ignore you. if you have the luxury of starting at 3rd level or higher you could pick up fey foundling as 1st level feat for extra healing and push the rest back 2 levels.

I can see 3 really interesting routes. The most standard is the Elemental (Fire) blaster sorcerer. A less standard alternative could be Crossblooded Sorcerer (Orc/Dragonic) 1 / Flame Oracle X for an alternative blaster that transforms into fire elementals faster than the average oracle thanks to his favored class bonus. Finally for a more martial character an Immolator Inquisitor using the racial feat Firesight and the Ash subdomain can make an awesome archer, just use some kind of smokescreen (like Wall of Ashes) and beat the hell out of them.

Also, if you like the Scorching weapons feat tree, you could go with an Ifrit Paladin or Ninja or even a Synthesist Summoner (all benefit from Charisma boost).

Silver Crusade

Hmmmm...you guys are giving me some good stuff to think about. I should have clarified this will be for PFS, so I don't think the synthesist summoner is legal.

Paladin - I already have one at level 5, although with the +Dex/+Cha i could make a Divine Archer I suppose. I do already have an archer inquisitor and fighter and a gunslinger, so I'm not sure about another ranged character

Ninja - my ninja is only level 1 and is a half-elf, so I could re-optimize and apply the boon to it, but I really like being a half-elf because of the Ancestral Arms alternate racial trait

Inquisitor - I already have a level 6 archer inquisitor, so making another one probably isn't going to happen, although the build does sound fun

Sorcerer - this is probablty the way to go. I have a level 1 wizard who's an admixture specialist blaster and I could also re-optimize him into a different kind of character, then make the ifrit a blaster sorcerer.

I'm definitely liking the worshipper of Sarenrae idea. It's too bad they get -Wis or I would definitely consider a cleric of Sarenrae. Maybe I'll go with a Flame oracle, although I also already have an oracle character, although of the Life variety.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but why not do an Ifrit Barbarian? Get the alternate trait that trades burning hands for Enlarge person, and if you wanna really play up the fire aspect go for Elemental Kin archetype.

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I vote for ninja that can see through his own smokebombs.

a flame oracle with the blackened curse would be nothing like a life oracle... it would make for an interesting ifrit though (and you could invest feats in eldritch heritage to pick up elemental or efreeti powers, just to really maximize how many supernatural/spell-like abilities you can play with).

the thing i like about the reach pally with sacred servant is that you really can use him a lot of different ways when the situation demands: against BBEG you smite, get right up in his face and rely on LoH to keep you going; against crowds you toss a fireball and use your reach to protect yourself and contain the baddies; and you have enough dex to carry around a bow to use against flying creatures (if you're not worried about the scorching weapon feats you could even grab an archery feat or 2 to really be a solid switch hitter).

If you go Sorcerer, make sure to choose the Elemental (Primal) bloodline. It is better both for blasting and summoning. At ninth level your summons take a big boost, having superior summoning by then is strongly suggested.

I thought about this, but I'm finding it very hard to make a barbarian that isn't a human for the sweet, sweet bonuses to the Superstitious rage power.

Meh, as it stands I already have 9 characters in play in PFS and an alchemist created that I've never played. I think I'll just hold onto the boon for a bit until I am ready to create a new character.

Bard. Don't really get why it wasn't brought up yet either. The alt racials even support it in Hypnotic and Wildfire heart.

You can even go with dawn-flower dervish if you want to still go with a religious side, but honestly I'm less enamored with them than others seem to be.

Bards are also one of the safest bets in PFS, as not a huge number of players play them and they can fill most holes in a party if needed. Also, PFS in my area tends to have larger tables than 4-5, more often the full allowed than not. Bards slot perfectly into large parties.

Grand Lodge

Flame Oracle.

Use the Ifrit's favored class bonus on Form of Flame, and spend 24 hours a day as a walking ball of flame.

Silver Crusade

Hmmmm, bard definitely has potential. I already have a bard, but it's still level 1 so I could always re-optimize and apply the ifrit boon to it. My bard is a Sound Striker, though. Although I don't guess race really matters for that and Ifrits have a good set of ability modifiers for bard.

I'm also still considering the Flames oracle, I just don't know if I want another oracle.

Scarab Sages

Locally a few of us have ifrits and we are building some messed up Gunslinger/Paladins. The builds are shaping up as follows:

Brother Justice: Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger)1/Fighter (Weapon Master)3/Paladin(Sacred Servant)7

Brother Vengeance: Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger)1/Fighter (Weapon Master)5/Paladin(Oath of Vengeance)5

Brother Wrath: Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger)1/Fighter(Weapon Master)3/Paladin(Divine Hunter)2/ Sorcerer 5

Silver Crusade

After reviewing the race more carefully, I think it's going to be hard to pass up a sorcerer with the elemental (fire) bloodline. I just wish my wizard wasn't a blaster wizard, because I'm afraid the characters are going to play too much alike.

Shadow Lodge

Perhaps you could try an alchemist character. You can Dump CHA to a 9-10 and still semi-useful in non-combat situations (at least to help aid another more safely) and pump Dex fairly easily so you can focus on archery and bombing (best with 1 level of fighter or urban barbarian for the martial proficiencies).

Sczarni

If you go Bard, I'm pretty sure you don't need to multiclass to qualify for the feat Fire Music.

At least, nobody said "no" yet to my question.
