Wonders what he could have done to prevent this.
How about a Kilometre wide fire break around the town.

Also the Blue Mountains are a series of towns each on a spur or ridge.... Creating a 1km firebreak would be physically impossible.
Like RDG said its education... If you are living in a highly flammable Forrest you need to adapt and plan accordingly..... Also you have to accept no mater how well you plan and how hard you fight sometimes, Mother Nature will kick you in the nut sack, punch you in the face and then burn your house down because she can and you can't stop her.

I'm well away from the Springwood fire, but tonight I'm backing up the rest of our photos onto a harddrive and leaving it in my desk at home.
While thats copying over I'll pack a suitcase with the physical photo albums and a few things that can't be replaced, spare clothes and a few essentials.
If the worst happens in the next few months I want to be ready to leave in minutes.

Not really. The logging industry have this awesome tree cutter that hangs from a chopper allowing log harvesting and removal by chopper. And Tasmania's Logging industry are looking for work on account of not being able to log Tasmanian Forests -despite Bush fires in Tasmania.
I have no sympathy for government officials on this - they need to be prosecuted for their choices.

Some out there suggestions
Bind an army of Madrid and get them to spam 'create water' when needed.
Give each augment each rural firstation with a squad of Ducks, and an Elephant for every 6 stations.
Develop a treatment for Asbestosis, and then build houses out of that.
Build all new homes in fire prone areas undergeound.
Start recruiting water benders from the south pole
Line the perimeter or each town with wind turbines. These can generate electricity for the locals during non bush fire periods and, during and emergency, be switched into reverse to blow out the fire birthday style.
