Since the Bestiaries were approved, and most of the ARG races were reprinted in Bestiary 4, I'd say you should be clear, as long as your OGL credit goes to Bestiary 4 - though I would double-check the Bestiary 4 list to make sure it does get reprinted there, just to be safe!
It is of course not my call though =)

Oops. Just realized the race (CR 1/3) of one of the opponents only appears in the ARG. I'm trying shoe-horn the concept into a Bestiary 1/Core race, as it appears that your OGL sources only allow some of the rule books.
Wondering why, though.
It's in Bestiary 4. I'll wait for confirmation, but will cogitate on possible solutions in the meantime.

Hi Creighton,
If this is in the guidelines I missed it, but if we send two submissions, should it be one document, one email; two documents one email, two documents two emails?
Thanks.
For the record folks: 3 days is all the time RPGSS allows for the encounter round :)
I'd prefer them in separate files please. It's easier to keep track of things that way!

Good thing I have RPGSS experience then, because I only found this thread a couple of hours ago.
The 1.500 word count limit also happens to be an exact match to the Superstar encounter round. Just sayin'.

Sadly, I will not be submitting anything at this time. Illness and injury have kept me from finishing anything that I would consider worth while to use. I haven't even finished polishing a series of reviews I was going to put up. I think that anything that I should submit for consideration should be of the best quality I can give.
I'm really disappointed as the time I had set aside to create was plagued with problems that kept me from typing anything for more than five minutes at a time. Ah well, c'est la vie.
I hope you get a lot of great submissions, Creighton, and find a lot of new talent!

Aye, I'm in the same boat, unfortunately. Various events have conspired against me and the time I had set aside to do this has been consumed by other issues. I do hope there'll be another round of open calls at some point as I think this is a great opportunity for aspiring game designers.
I look forward to the results of this open call.

Jiggy, I can't speak for Creighton specifically of course, but in general when a publisher gives a freelancer a word count, it's a pretty hard target (meaning try to get as close to that number as possible)
If you go too far over, the publisher has to go back to you and ask for cuts (or makes them himself) either of which takes additional time and effort.
If you are too far under, the publisher needs to go back and ask you to write more (or write it himself) or otherwise find other content to fill the space, all of which takes additional time and effort.
So, as a general rule, if a publisher gives you a word count, do your best to hit it.
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the guidance! The draft I'm sitting on at the moment is about 1390 or so, and I thought of a little something to add. Should turn out well within that +/-10% range. Phew, for a minute I was worried I needed be within like 2 words or something. :)

Feel better, both of you.

Good things to add to make up word count include interesting terrain features that can be used in battle by cunning combatants and roleplay notes for the main villain. Both are words well spent.

Just noticed that the encounter template differentiates between "speed" and "base speed" in a manner that other monster templates I have seen do not.
Is "speed" supposed to "base speed" modified by the terrain type?
EDIT:
Nevermind. The speed difference is in case of armor and encumbrance of course. Doh ;-)

And my submission's in.
Looks like all three Jacobs are submitting. Of course, without the dragon avatar, hopefully it'll be easier to figure out which is which.
Yup. My submission is done and awaiting a final round of proofreading before I mail it in. I would have liked to make two, but between family and work, I'm happy I just got the one done.

Cutting it close!! Roughly 5½ hours before deadline (in Denmark) and using 1643 words - 7 words from the +10% maximum! :-D
This was my first encounter design using vehicle rules from Ultimate Combat - really thrilled to learn how Creighton thinks it turned out! ;-)
No matter what, it has been a fun challenge to design and submit. I hope Raging Swan will do more of these open calls.

That makes two Danish submissions, then (and at least three Jacobs). Just sent in mine. And yeah, accepted or not, this has been valuable practice. I'll be looking out for more open calls.

Thanks Raging Swan :)

Exactly - and THIS
Both of these have deadlines around the end of the month, so hop to it.

... and for all my trying, nothing came together the way I wanted. I thought I had some good ideas, but when I came to write them within the format, they just didn’t click to what I consider a submittable standard. :-S
Ah, well; maybe it’ll work out better the next time. If there is one. :-X
I feel you, buddy - once I got down to fitting everything down into those 1,500 words, including stat blocks and rules references, a lot of my cool ideas had been dropped, and the end result feels too close to "ten standard orcs jumping out from behind a tree" for comfort. We'll see how Creighton feels about it.

I found, from writing 'Weal or Woe' articles for Wayfinder, that 1500 words means you could get two decent mid- to high-level PC statblocks, and about a half to three-quarter page of backstory and motivation.
To do that, I did have to assume the reader was familiar with the majority of class abilities and feats presented. If I'd printed the rules for all of them, one statblock would have easily gone over the wordcount for the whole article.

Right! That's the Broken Freelancers Open Call closed! I've received about 50 entries and now I'm starting the long process of sifting through the entries. That's about 75,000 word so it will take me a few weeks to narrow down the field a bit.
This has been a lot of fun and I'll definitely be doing this again next year. Thanks very much to everyone who entered - I'll be contacting you shortly.
