Ninja, as a Cleric

Advice

Grand Lodge

So, I was hoping to put together a Cleric build, with a Ninja flavor to it. No actual Ninja levels.

I want Yaezhing, for flavor, and favored weapon.

I have a 20 point buy, and no real restriction on Race, but nothing like Drow Noble, or more powerful. No 3rd party. We are using the Drawback option, but we don't have to.

Any ideas?

Here's something I would think of playing as cleric. Thing is, without sneaky class levels, you won't get things like sneak attack or evasion or uncanny dodge or etc. You can get a fair stealth bonus with this build.

Race: Human
Class: Cleric
Alignment: LN (in case you want to channel positive OR negative)

Domains: Trickery (Stealth, bluff, Disguise as class skills and some REALLY good rogue related spells through your domains)

and

Death (kick ass necromancy spells)
- With this domain you can have the option of healing yourself with negative energy at 8th level.

Favored weapon: Shuriken ... Eh. Kinda cool.

Stats

Str: 11
Dex: 15
Con: 12
Int: 7
Wis: 17
Cha: 15

Feats:

1st level
Selective Channel and
Skill Focus(Stealth) - You need this for the Eldritch Heritage feat to gain access to the Shadow Bloodline. (You get a cool blasting power but the real reason to get this feat is to get the SHADOW WELL power at 11 when you get the Improved Eldritch heritage feat)

3rd
Eldritch Heritage - Choose Shadow Bloodline.

From there the choice is up to you how to choose to play your character. You can also choose to somehow push you Int a little higher so that you can take more skills to the party face at the cost of some other stat but you need your Cha to be 15 to get access to the Improved Eldritch Heritage Feat.

Dex is preferable to abuse the HUGE bonus to Stealth you're going to get with Stealth which can get even more ridiculous with use of the invisibility.

Unfortunately, aside from being a REALLY good party scout, you're not really going to be able to do much in terms of DPR since you don't really have access to things like sneak attack. However, you do have some of the versatility of a rouge or ninja.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would go with Tengu so you can use a katana or wakizashi. Murder and Trickery as domains sounds like it would work. High dex combined with a wakizashi sounds like it could work well. Extensive use of the Silent spell feat and the invisibility spells granted by the trickery domain would work well.

Tengu does seem to work well.

Eldritch Heritage for Shadow Bloodline sounds good too.

What about Guided Hand?

Well Channel Smite is a less crappy option for a negative channeller than for a positive channeller, so the tax isn't as painful. Do you have a particular murder deity in mind? And if so, is the favoured weapon a good one? 14 Str, maxed out Wis, Power Attack and Guided Hand should all work together nicely as long as you can spare the feats. If the build started getting tight on feats, it'd probably have to be the first area to start cutting.

I completely forgot about Channel Smite. With that, you can FINALLY do the DPR role you would normally do as a Ninja. VERY cool concept in fact.

Sczarni

Take the Armor Expert combat trait and save up for a Mithral Breastplate.
If you decide to go with Channel Smite then make your other trait Sacred Conduit to increase the likelihood of full damage.

I'm thinking Eldritch Heritage might be a bit feat taxing. If you decide not to go that route, be a Half-Elf and take Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Katana) as a bonus feat. You'd be hard to distinguish from a true ninja.

Grand Lodge

Sorry about the slow response. I was temporarily suspended.

If I go Channel Smite, would Variant Channeling work, as a way of stacking conditions, instead of just damage?

Also, if I go Tengu, what should my stat array look like?

Given shuriken as the deity's favoured weapon, I don't think guided hand is worthwhile.

Without sneak attack or a STR bonus how do you expect to use those Shuriken effectively?

Grand Lodge

What about the Crusader Cleric archetype?

Also, what about a Spell-like ability gaining trait and Arcane Strike?

I think the channel smite is going to give you more damage than arcane strike, albeit without the staying power. Of course, you can't use channel smite with your shuriken; assuming you do intend to make any significant use of them, then arcane strike will do you more good (assuming that shuriken can be boosted w/ arcane strike - do they count as weapons or as ammo for this purpose?).

I think you should jsut give up on cleric.

To do this properly you need a lot of things to work out that just would be too difficult given a cleric's typical set of skills.

Instead make an inquisitor.

With the Murder domain adding on to your killy sills by making everything bleed you're in good shape to be very ninja. All the necessary ninja skills are class skills or able to get with traits.

You're still very much a priest but you're much better equipped to enact your gods horrible horrible will.

Definitely go tengu of course. KAtana's and Wazikashi are things that ninja's use.

The two main problems are that shuriken are a lousy favoured weapon and that Clerics just don't have enough skill points to emulate ninjas particularly well.

Grand Lodge

I am putting Inquisitor as an absolute last resort, and only as a dip, as I just played one.

Also, higher level spells.

Would it be worth it to take the Cloistered Cleric archetype for extra skills?

Only if you want to lose your favored weapon.

Since his favoured weapon isn't actually all that useful, it's not much of a loss. Reduced spells and losing a domain are the larger penalty.

I think it's probably necessary bbt. There's just too many skills you need to emulate the ninja otherwise. The extra two per level will make a big difference and being able to avoid spending points on any knowledge skills will help a bit as well.

Grand Lodge

Well, the Exotic Weapon Training alternate racial trait could give me proficiency with 3 + Int different "eastern weapons".

Still, spell and Domain loss.

I have also just been told that Animal and Terrain Domains will be allowed for this PC, if explained how they fit thematically.
