Cavalier Mount Armor

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I am working on a cavalier for PFS. It is a Halfling with a wolf mount. I am confused on armor for the wolf. It says that he starts with Light Armor proficiency. So I just pay double the cost of a chain shirt and my wolf has one? Then there is an entry on for barding, but I cant seem to find how much armor it gives, just the penalty to speed. Any help?

Scarab Sages

Yes, just pay double cost and your wolf will have a chain shirt that gives no penalty to speed.

The reduced speeds in the Barding entry are for medium and heavy armor. Light armor doesn't slow a mount down, just like it doesn't slow a PC down.

Barding is a special armor that a creature wears when the creature is being used as a mount. With the exception of flying creatures it is no different than other armors made for non-standard creatures.

I guess I meant what does barding do besides slow the mount down? Or is any armor the mount wearing barding?

Man of Steel 84, correct, any armor a mount wears is by definition barding. The difference is virtually nonexistent except for flying mounts.

Barding does not slow down any creature any more than regular armor does.

Put Medium Armor on a creature with a 40' speed, it is slowed to 30'.
Put Medium Barding on a (non-flying) mount with a 40' speed, it is slowed to 30'.

Put Heavy Armor on a creature with a 40' speed, it is slowed to 30' and a x3 run speed.
Put Heavy Barding on a (non-flying) mount with a 40' speed, it is slowed to 30' and a x3 run speed.
