Mythic staff use

Rules Questions

Mythic characters can get a path ability that lets them add their tier to caster level when using magic items, including staves.

Since you use your own caster level when using a staff, does this mean a mythic caster with a staff can get in excess of his/her level in CL when casting from it?

That's how I read it. It's not entirely without precedent: Obviously there are a variety of traits/feats and other means of increasing your CL for your own spells, this merely takes a similar approach to item use.

A nice ability, too -- I hadn't noticed then one yet, but having taken a second look at it, think it's pretty solid.

Mythic 10, level 20, CL 30+ for staff spells! :D

Yes. Mythic. Above and beyond the capabilities of mortals ... that seems to me to be what mythic is all about.

Staves, actually worth something now.

Staves can be recharged without requiring new material components. Staves have always been worth something - maybe not a feat, but something :) (though my crafters usually take the feat, eventually)

This can go much higher with certain traits, feats, and other abilities with similar effects.

Just off the top of my head you could be a half-elf with the Arcane Training racial trait (+1), the Outlander: Lore Seeker trait (+1), the Spell Specialization, Spell Perfection, and Varissian Tattoo feats (+6), and an Orange Prism Ioun Stone (+1).

That's CL 39 with one of your staff's spells. Best make it a good one.

(With a little delving, I have no doubt that it could go higher.)

Keep in mind that many spells do impose an internal glass ceiling on how high their effective caster level can be. i.e. CL5 for cure light wounds, CL10 for Fireball etc. You'll need other means to deal with those issues on a spell by spell basis.

More like partial ceilings. Fireball's damage might have a cap, but it's range and ability to bypass SR sure doesn't.

I too was going to mention the normal internal caps to damage and the like that most spells have. So while being able to pump your caster level may be useful in some spells, I'm not sure how valuable this may be overall (at least it terms of maximums). It could make an invaluable difference at mid-range levels though where you could really bump up your damage with some spells.

My character, Sela Kurn, makes unbelievably awesome use of caster level increases on his dispel checks. As written, he auto-succeeds at taking down spells of casters five levels higher than himself!

(It's also great that his swift action dispellings lower his foe's saves significantly and stun/sicken them as well, totally opening them up for encounter-ending save or die effects!)

It's actually half your tier.

Your mythic presence enhances the power of certain magic items. Add half your tier to the caster level of potions, scrolls, staves, and wands you use. When using a staff or wand, you may activate the item by expending one use of mythic power instead of one of the item's charges.

Though, maybe people are talking about another path ability I'm missing?
