No Issue With Suggested Decks

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Oaky, Ive seen several threads mention that there is an issue with using the suggested decks. Several people have complained that there are certain combos of characters that can't be played using the suugested decks because there are only X# of one card. I haven't had a chance to double checks this but last night I'm pretty sure I created all 11 suggested decks, at the same time, with the exception of Blessings.

I started this out because tonight we are going to be showing the game to some new players and I wanted to speed things up by having some of the starting decks ready. I decided I put as many together as possible and then I would return those not used. I have both the Base Set and the Character Add-on Set. Included in the cards were both of these sets. I did not add in the cards from the first Adventure Deck. The only change I made to the lists is that I substituted Chain Mail for the Half-Plate.

What I found was that I had enough of each named card to create all 11 decks with the exception of Blessings for Sajan and Seelah (I came up 13 Blessings short). Can anyone else confirm this for me? Has anyone else tried to do this? I know we shouldn't play with all 11 created (it will incredibly stack the loot in our favor) but just for "display" purposes it seems to be possible.

Thanks.

You also need to change Harsk's Starknife to a Sling. BTW, someone else pointed out that they like to keep the character decks all loaded up also because then you get better pulls for building the location deck since most of the cards with the Basic Traits are not in character decks.

Thanks for mentioning the starknife, I had forgotten that change. I do believe there is still a sling available but I'll have to check that when I get home.

As far as keeping all the characters loaded I think that would provide to great an advantage in the game as there would be little chance of getting the basic cards as loot. Plus the change to the Blessings Deck would be way to much, you would never have a plain Blessing of the Gods in it, and any Blessings that you might pull would have to be greater blessings. While I agree that since this is a "board" game and not an RPG that min/max-ing is going to happen (its more strategy than story after all) but stacking the game in this way is just taking the fun out of it.

Maybe when playing with younger players or n on-gamers that don't enjoy the game element, I could see doing this. Otherwise just play the game. That's my opinion.

I'm the one who complained about not being able to make all 7 recommended character decks at once, but I also don't have the character add-on expansion.

The problem was that the recommended decks for Harsk and Merisiel both call for a Potion of Vision, but the base set only contains one of those cards. Also, there are only two Burglar cards in the base set, but Lem, Merisiel, and Seoni are all supposed to get one.

If there's an extra Potion of Vision and Burglar in the character add-on set, which I don't have, then that would explain why you aren't having those problems.

I was thinking that the Add-on might be why it was working out for me because I read the post you put up and it didn't seem to cause to much of a stir. That's the reason I put in what sets I was working with. I did notice that a few people commented that they couldn't make all the characters (including the ones that come with the Add-on) unless they had it but you were specific to just characters that came with the Base. I'll have to look closer when I get home to see what came in what set.

I would also like to point out that the recommended decks are just that...recommendations. If you are missing two cards....then use different ones. Personally, I rarely roll with the recommended decks. I always tweak them. For example, I always give Ezen the Mace instead of the Quarterstaff because it has a higher die.

As far as I know they only stated you should have all the cards you need if you have the character add on. They didn't make that statement for the base game.

Thanks, I hadn't seen them make such a statement.

As for using the suggested decks, while I agree with tweaking the decks, having 2-3 inexperienced players trying for the first time on a night when you only have 4-5 hours to play means you have to exlplain the basis of the game (encounters, blessings, villians, etc.) then explain how the game works (the six types of "playing " cards, ie. reveal, discard, etc.), then how each of the characters abilities might work out, and then let the new players go through all the basic cards to see what would be best for each character, then as they do that and change their minds,... well you see where I'm going.

The one exception to this for me is changing out any "Guards". I find this card to be completely useless. So I suggest any one change this card out from their starting decks.

Thanks for all the info.

Well, I never said that newbies should be let loose in the box to make their own decks. That is crazy talk. But there is nothing wrong with using your own experience to tweak the decks for them before they get their grubby little hands on them.

My take - leave 'em with the starting decks; they'll soon see that upgrading a quarterstaff to a mace is a good idea. But the first two scenarios aren't so dangerous that they *need* to run with upgraded decks.

And if they can't figure it out....get better friends :P

I have to agree with you on this. Though TClifford has a point with tweeking them before letting them run with it. My issue is more of a time thing than their ability.

And, TClifford, Thats Harsh! Still, except for non-gamer relatives (and SO's) of my friends, I have to agree.
