Very preliminary interest check in gestalt arena

Recruitment

Several months ago my brother started a PvP arena here on the boards. I wanted to check interest for a similar arena. Here's the catch all of the characters would be gestalt. Another possible idea I had was to have everyone submit there character with another person. this would mean that arena fights would be fought in duos. I think this would lead to some very interesting teamwork.

So who might be interested in playing something like this. Please don't post characters right now although concepts are fine. Also please tell me what you think about the teamwork idea.

I would be interested in this. If you decide to go with the teamwork idea I have a friend who would likely be interested as well. What level characters?

i might be interested, especially if 3pp (particularly psionics) are allowed.

Sczarni

I'd be totally down for this, we can use like any OP thing we can find especially psionics from 3rd party stuff right!?

Not sure if sarcasm or...

Sczarni

or sarcasm =D

Actually if you're wanting interest, the guidelines would be a good place to start.

Like custom races y/n?
-disallowed custome race builds?
Disallowed classes?
Disallowed feats? (I'd vote for crafting and for leadership)

I've wanted to try out gestalt. This would be an interesting way.

I am not sure on all of the details yet. Most 3rd party will probably be allowed but I have to check it all out first.

no custom races, I will post a list of playable races if I get this up and running.
all classes/archetypes are allowed.
No crafting or leadership

Sczarni

level 20? =D

I've got some interest.

This would probably be fairly low-level.

I was thinking about posting something like this but then thought of the pain with the PbP style combat if not everyone is on... I would love to join though I would like to know more specifics like: level, point buy or die roll, if there are any non-mixing of classes (like you can't be two martial classes), what 3rd party material would be acceptable to use (I personally never look to 3rd party but I would like to know what my opponents could do).

I magus/wizard or other spellcaster always seemed like an *awesome* idea to me, but it requires at least level 6 for the arcana (right?). Though at lower levels, a magus/ranger or some other Full BaB would be fun

Got a taste for epic-level play, eh lantz? :P

Sczarni

more or less just asking for parameters before interest is really given lol.

Although I do want to play one high lvl game that actually goes somewhere.

i had a gestalt idea that seemed kinda fun, being a gunslinger on one side, and going with psychic warrior or psion up to Elocator on the other side. basically ending up with a guy who can walk up walls and stuff while shooting at people.

for my two cents, i would say mid levels would be the real sweet spot. high level games seem to die out due to overwhelming work required of the GM, and there is (in my opinion) an over-saturation of low level games on the boards. lv8-15 or so would be really nice.

I have lots n lots of concepts I could field for this, so am totally interested.

Teamwork idea sounds fun, but if it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for the GM, I think both duo duels and 1v1s should be allowed. This way, nobody is forced to pair up, nor must the go solo if they don't want to.

Hmmmm... can we release lions into the arena? Or even better yet, gestalt lion/ninjas.

You know what I'd like to see? A nice, flashy, duel between Blaster spell asters. I could test out something I've been wanting too for a long time... Two weeks. ;)

1 on 1 is a good idea also, but i would be interested in doing 2v2 matches.

Bump for posterity

edit: might've still been on the first page. If so, my bad! Hopefully there's still interest here though.

Shadow Lodge

if I am not entirely too late I would be interested

sounds interesting.

I have been slaughtered in every one of these arena things. as my first match is always been against an opponent that specialized in the same area as my weakness.

also not so sure on the pairing idea as I don't have a fellow player to join with.

besides once you throw in combat ready mounts or ediolons and monsterous animal companions even familiars that can use magic items you already have small armies to get through before the actual combatant fights.

(yes fought them all and lost to them all)

Shadow Lodge

I could join ya if you want ed, though I'd be just fine with solo

Ooh. Does sound fun. :D
Hi Billy! :)
Hey Ed/Foul. If either of you would be interested in playing a summoner or druid or beast master for this, maybe I could operate the summon/ ac?
Or maybe I can find my own partner and fight y'all! :)

Shadow Lodge

I have a few ideas floating around
what level are we going to be and with what equipment allowed
and is 3rd party allowed?

Shadow Lodge

I could play an alchemist/barbarian I'm thinking suli or skinwalker for the race, or a dhampir death mage/oracle
or an aasimar or half giant magus/soulknife

i am also interested still. the weekends are when i make my characters.

i would play by myself or on a team with one or more other people.

i would like to try some of the Dreamscarred Press's Path of War Beta material, if that is ok. there are also some other character ideas i like, 3pp and otherwise.

i havent done many arenas (the one i DID do was an actual campaign in the arena, not just fights), but i did pretty well when PvP inevitably erupted in my old DnD 3.5 group. but i was much better at optimizing in 3.5 than i am in pathfinder.

Is there any story involved? Or are we just rolling and rolling dice?
Are we out when we die or is it just tournament style with an ambiguous way that we're ressed to come back and fight again after we die?

Shadow Lodge

possibly we won't be ressed and will have to make new characters, or are booted from the thing

Sounds like Annie could play here...

:) I am hoping that people have a high enough interest in 2V2, because I want to play a defense specialist... :)

I am interested, but it depends on how much 3.(Splat) and 3rd party Publishing is allowed...

if its all pathfinder, Lets roll :D

if I end up facing people that can make an Elementalist, Diabolist with 22+ summoned monsters I'm out, and you cant say "I wont let that happen" while still allowing the 3rd party splat, because such a build would be viable

I agree with DK. I don't even have much of a like of psionics for this kind of thing.

Should be pathfinder only no 3rd party and no 3.x anything.

I think this might be dead, Jim...

you could just make a rule, on top of normal rules, that say the arena has some effect on it that limits the number of beings within its bounds. a small number, like 6

that, or people who make builds with lots of minions have to fight on their own against teams. (this might be balanced by the fact that each team member gets full gold, but that one person with the minions has to spend their personal wealth on those minions)

That means if one team wins initiative, they can stomp a summoner team with a level 2 spell...

That's unbalanced as well...

Shadow Lodge

I like 3rd party, pathfinder was originally a "3rd party" system after all

however I do think leadership should be disallowed
and any 3rd party classes/races should be approved before it gets implemented

I have seen battle machines built at level 1 that are quite unbalanced. they all use non-paizo stuff. coupled with some paizo stuff.

I could show you here but i don't want to give ideas.

Lord I can PM the build if you would like.

Shadow Lodge

sure I'd love to see such a build.
I like seeing other people's builds in general, it is interesting to see the thought processes behind them
and that's why the DM has Veto power

Well I just came up with a number out of the top of my head

And the eidolon could probably one-hit any lv2 summons.

DM veto power on silly builds

The level 2 spell is any summon 1 for 1d4+1 lesser creatures... Max limit of creatures is reached, no summon for summoner... dominate ensues

Shadow Lodge

you could alternatively roll a 1 and get 2 lower level creatures as opposed to one stronger one

Foul I see his point...

Its 2v2 that's 4... plus 2(minimum) summoned creatures...

That's 6, maximum number of creatures in ring

Shadow Lodge

ah, sorry, that makes sense now, sorry I misinterpreted somehow

Shadow Lodge

I just realized the maker of this forum hasn't posted here since september...

good discussion forum then.

another cheap low level set up was a familiar that can use a wand.

give them a wand with 0 level spell vanish.

cheap invisibility you take your action and the familiar zaps you with the wand.

the chaarcter in question here had a familiar that had greater inviso as a spell like ability.

Shadow Lodge

Alchemist/vitalist
While far from a combat powerhouse is very good at healing
Take tumor familiar, (it has fast heal 5)
add the familiar to your collective
It's that easy

I wouldn't mind running this. It's an arena so that doesn't take nearly as much effort as a full adventure.

We can use this forum as a spot to discuss the rules and then I can create a new recruitment thread if that works for you guys.
