In the Summon Monster spell description it states "This spell summons an extraplanar creature (typically an outsider, elemental, or MAGICAL BEAST native to another plane)." I've looked and I can't find an example of a magical beast. I can find lots of examples of animals though. Is this another holdover from D&D 3.5?
Don't look at the summon lists as hard code for what you can summon. Some GM's may not fit what's listed into their campaign, and some players may want alternatives in their thematic RP. Magical beasts are like unicorns, blink dogs and the like.
From the SRD: Magical Beasts are similar to animals but can have Intelligence scores higher than 2 (in which case the creature knows at least one language, but can’t necessarily speak). Magical Beasts usually have supernatural or extraordinary abilities, but are sometimes merely bizarre in appearance or habits.
so if your sparkle pony wants a hugsalot carebear, it's doable. (example only) Just talk it out with your gm. the SM etc. spells and lists are basic, in a pinch or don't want to go to that trouble lists.

A lot of the alternate examples are magical beasts. The first example I can find is blink dogs can be summoned using summon monster III. I think you need a specific deity though.

Yes, it is. In 3.5, the Celestial template (and its cousins) turned Animals into Magical Beasts
