Hello, I'm DM Frogfoot. My homebrew campaign set in Golarion, The Wastes of Belkzen, has had a few players drop off the face of the earth. It's a sad state of affairs, but not uncommon to play-by-post campaigns. Ordinarily I would want to just soldier on until they return, however, this time it's affecting their ability to move forward with the story.
SO! I am opening recruitment for two or possibly three more players to join our team of 4. You would be a deputy for the sheriff of Freedom Town, a haven for thieves and malcontents who fled the authority of the city of Vigil. The roster of our team:
Suny, a Sea Elf Fighter from the southern coasts, who wandered up the Flood Road to Freedom Town in search of adventure and joined the law on a whim. She fights with great skill in melee, and is extremely difficult to land a strike on - but outside of combat, you can not find anyone with a sweeter, more friendly disposition.
Arwen, an Aasimar Scion of Humanity urban barbarian, the only remaining deputy who was a local of Freedom Town before the campaign began, who switches weapons for different situations, fights selflessly for his fellow deputies, and favors a simple, direct solution to problems.
Caln, a human cleric of Pharasma who was guided to Freedom Town by prophetic dreams that told him of a great need there. He is still troubled by these dreams, which warn of a great calamity, and has been warned by a shadowy individual to trust no-one in Freedom Town.
and last but not least, Jethro, whose true race is a mystery even to him, but resembles a tallish gnome. His arcane art is a secret to most, and manifests as tattoos on his skin. He joined the sheriff's department as a way to have a steady job, being a drifter who wandered into Freedom Town. He usually fills the sarcastic deadpan humor role in social situations. ;)
So, read the list of players and decide for yourself what would be the best fit for the party, both roleplaying wise and combat wise. I try to keep an even mix of RP and combat in my sessions, giving equal time to both. I also try to make skill checks important and varied, with real consequences for failure. So keep that in mind too.
I have a posting requirement of one post per day. This requirement must be acknowledged in your application post, please. It's very important, as it helps keep the campaign flow going.
You're starting at level 2, with 1,000 gold. I'm pretty sure that's in-line with what the other deputies have in terms of wealth - players, correct me if I'm wrong there. Regardless, you'll be starting with the same amount of gold as they have had access to, whatever that is.
Two traits, of different types. No evil please.
All classes and races are allowed, just make sure it's explained properly in your backstory. Here is a list of known NPCs. Feel free to include them in your backstory if you choose to be a local or new in town.
Lewis Faelorn: Lewis is not actually as old as he looks, merely defeated. He was a former soldier for Lastwall's armies, fighting orcs in the mountains to the southwest of here. When the orcs were sacking Ironhearth Foundry, Lewis was chastised for leaving his post to fight in the battle. He fought alongside the dwarves there, for he knew some of them and called them his friends. They all perished when Ironhearth was sacked by the Steel-Eaters. When he escaped, he bitterly returned to Vigil and made an impassioned attempt to "Get those scum-sucking vermin to answer for their crimes." He doesn't elaborate further on what it was he attempted to do, but he was exiled for it and has been drinking away his sorrows ever since.
Leonard Truffe: The tall man identifies himself as Leonard Truffe, and he walks around the countertop as he identifies what Suny is after. By the time she's finished paying, he's standing directly in front of her - looming at a height of almost seven feet. Arwen and Marco know as residents that Truffe's reputation as a gentle giant is well-deserved - any trouble that happens within Freedom Town's limits hardly ever touches his Inn.
Orsain: A traveling human merchant with connections in Vigil, he and his travelling companions were captured by the Gnarltusk tribe and rescued by the Freedom Town deputies.
Leora: a half-elf girl who was travelling with Orsain's merchant caravan when it was captured by the Gnarltusk tribe. Has a crush on Gryndar Grogslayer.
Melisa: a human woman whose son, Trent, was killed in the escape attempt from the Gnarltusk tribe.
Erwin: A human druid, operating for some unknown reason in the Hold of Belkzen region. With his animal companion Hierodotus he works to undermine the orcs in the area in their nefarious schemes. Has past connections with Oswald.
Also, you're about to be dropped into an ambush encounter once recruitment ends. So, yeah. Be ready for that.
The gameplay thread is here. After you apply, familiarize yourself with the events of the past few pages, because you're going to be retconned right into it.
Cheers folks! Have fun creating a deputy for me :)

I've been part of the campaign from the beginning and would highly recommend it. It was my very first PBP experience and it's got me hooked on the experience. It's heavy on role-playing so there is often a pause between combats. I enjoy those role-playing opportunities just as much if not more than the combat but we did lose a player who complained about the pace being too slow. Just something to keep in mind.

Leliestraat |

I would like to express interest in the campaign and will spend some time reading the gameplay thread!
I have experience with RPGs and play-by-post, though I have not played online for a little while. I will merely need to familiarize myself with the posting protocols and formats for dice, role-playing, action moves, etc.
I can commit to posting daily and enjoy writing, DnD, Pathfinder, and fantasy role-playing.
I have an affinity for spellcasters and the race of elves.
I look forward to speaking with you further regarding this opportunity!
Cheers!

So I glanced over the Gameplay thread and looked at the other characters in the group. Seems you might have lost your skilled folks, looks like you have martial and spellcasters covered.
I've got a couple of ideas, but not sure the Divine Hunter Paladin will be of as much use as a Ranger.
Do I seem to be on the right track for what you need?
Also, what favored enemies and terrain would I look at? I am considering an archetype I like, Woodland Skirmisher on d20 site, basically give up different favored enemies and terrains for just one, a bit more spellcasting and access to druid spell list for one spell per level.
Reading over the area and trying to get an idea. Was thinking maybe a Ranger sent up from Lastwall to maybe reinforce and help Freedom Town, plus provide scouting reports back to Lastwall.

DM Frogfoot |

Yeah, I responded to it before I saw your edit. As to your edited comments, your three best options for likely favored terrains are Desert, Mountain or Underground.
Favored enemies, Orc is an obvious choice, as the Hold of Belkzen contains the highest concentration of orcs in Golarion, and the primary antagonists at this point are a group of Orc engineers. There's no shortage of Human ne'er do wells, so that's another good pick.
As for your backstory idea, per the wiki Lastwall's government thinks very poorly of Freedom Town, and in my campaign my Sheriff NPC has ignored several communications from the city, so relationships aren't likely to be very friendly. The wiki actually says that Lastwall hopes the ravening groups of orcs in the region would "take care" of their "problem" (meaning Freedom Town) for good. So I don't think coming from Lastwall with the intent to reinforce Freedom Town is a backstory that makes much sense.
The woodland skirmisher archetype would work just fine.

![]() |

Yeah. The downside to the woodland skirmisher is that it's basically good for forests. Probably not the best, leaning toward just vanilla ranger.
I know Lastwall sees Freedom Town as a minor nuisance, but perhaps they might send someone up to keep an eye on things, more so for scouting than true encouragement. I guess the ranger could be tired of standing behind the bulwarks and wants to take the fight to the orcs.

If you'd like, you can start reading at page 1 of the discussion thread, you'll read the introduction and get a feel for what the plot of the game is. Basically, there are these modified orcs, "Weird Orcs," or "Rhuk-Orcs" as Erwin the Druid calls them, that have been released from the Foundry where the Steel Eater clan of orcs lives. Erwin believes, and the Sheriff agrees, that the Steel Eaters are constructing technology that will plunge the Hold into an unnaturally cold winter that will freeze out all competition. This will allow the Weird Orcs, under the Steel Eaters' control, to conquer the other orc tribes - and all human settlements, of course.

Ok Sounds real cool. I should mention that my new to this site and still learning how to do everything. I've playd pathfinder live before but i never done anything like this. I love to write and think the PbP concept is awesome. If you don't mine a new to pbp player then i'll began reading the thread.
btw on my profile i have listed the character i was playing live. we were using the 20 point buy system, and i put the +2 human bonus in dex. i also have the background posted that i wrote for him with i first created him. If you like him I'll really like to use him since the game i was using him for fell apart.

DM Frogfoot |

Interesting! I've never seen one of those before. You enchant your shield, yes? Do you throw your chakrams at range and then bash anyone who gets close with your shield?
*edit* Just checked your profile, and may have to bring you aboard just for the coolness factor of Returning Weapon. Captain America Spiked Shield, HOOO! Write up a backstory and I'll make a final decision.

So, I want to play a crafter... What about a Gnome Rogue? Magical Linguist... He also brings some skills.
FAQ allows Spell-Like Abilities to count towards CL requirements for Item Crafting Feats. Essentially, at 3rd level he can take Craft Wondrous Item.
Classically Schooled trait gives Spellcraft as a class skill.
He uses scrolls to power his crafting, via Use Magic Device. Alternate Favored Class bonus gives Gnomes +1/2 UMD per level & high Charisma.
As a Rogue, he's a professional who values the tools of the trade, and makes his own. He'll craft for the party too, of course.

Sethran Aeleanir |

Thanks, but hardly overlap as... This Gnome isn't a spell-caster per se. Just a couple of SLAs.
I try not to step on toes.
The love for language, they can share! Like long-lost brothers, reunited.
Thinking 8, 15, 14, 13, 13, 16.
I'm actually worried about overlap with the Urban Ranger's... Trapfinding! Should I take an archetype that loses it... keep it?

DM Frogfoot |

Alright, I want to make my decision rather quickly here. So far for applicants I have:
Drake Troy, a human ranger with an axe to grind with the entire orc race,
Jaxx, a gnome rogue specializing in crafting bizarre and useful magical items,
Armelio Rovil, a human magus, no backstory yet,
Lelistraat, probably an elven spellcaster of some kind,
Forthepie, a ranger,
and Gloin? Possible dwarf?
Get your backstory and character sheet defined ASAP if it isn't already, I will be choosing within the next day or so. Applications are still open for new people, but I still want a completed character ASAP. My deputies are fighting for their lives and need aid quickly!

DM Frogfoot |

Solid. You're in, Armelio. Begin posting in the gameplay thread after I've made today's post. After that, I expect you to adhere to the posting requirements of posting something once a day, even if it's a small little sentence. Thanks! :)
1 more spot available, possibly 2 if I like what I see enough.
