Lingering metamagic feat

Rules Questions

This question has been asked in various ways on the board but not been definitely answered, an FAQ response would be appreciated.

Does the lingering metamagic feat increase the duration of the spell in question to one round or does its duration remain instantaneous.

Ramifications:
A spell with a duration can be dispelled, extended, and is affected by the lingering evocations ability of the generation subschool of evocation:

Lingering Evocations:
"Lingering Evocations (Su): Any evocation spell you cast with a duration greater than instantaneous lasts an additional number of rounds equal to 1/2 your wizard level (minimum +1). At 20th level, any dispel checks made against your evocation spells must be rolled twice, and your opponent must use the less favorable result."

If the spell doesn't have duration, than it can't be dispelled, and more importantly, it can be affected by the selective spell metamagic:

Selective spell:
"When casting a selective spell with an area effect and a duration of instantaneous, you can choose a number of targets in the area equal to the ability score modifier used to determine bonus spells of the same type (Charisma for bards, oracles, paladins, sorcerers, and summoners; Intelligence for witches and wizards; Wisdom for clerics, druids, inquisitors, and rangers). These targets are excluded from the effects of your spell.
(a selective spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell’s actual level.)"

Bump

Lingering spell metamagic says:

"Those already in the area suffer no additional harm, but other creatures or objects entering the area are subject to its effects."

So even if you use lingering evocations on a lingering spell fireball, only the initial fireball damage would be dealt unless a creature outside specifically moves into the fireball.

I agree that the extra damage isn't amazing on its own, but the full text of lingering spell:

Lingering spell:
"Benefit: You may cause an instantaneous spell that affects an area to persist until the beginning of your next turn. Those already in the area suffer no additional harm, but other creatures or objects entering the area are subject to its effects. [bold]A lingering spell with a visual manifestation obscures vision, providing concealment (20% miss chance) beyond 5 feet and total concealment (50% miss chance) beyond 20 feet.[/bold]"

Meaning that smart players can have concealment clouds that only affect enemies, and this with lingering evocations means that you can place this and enemies can't fire into, through, or out of it, and makes melee easier, but it doesn't affect allies. Bonus points if dazing and its an area that enemies will not want to go and can't fire into but allies can stay in it.

lingering evocation and selective spell are mutually exclusive. you can only have one or the other. not both.

you can't have a single spell be both "instantaneous" to apply selective spell and have a duration to apply lingering evocation.

Yes, but my question is, if an instantaneous spell is modified with the lingering spell metamagic, does it get a duration of one round, or does its duration remain instantaneous. I listed what could be used with lingering spell if it gains a duration, or remains instantaneous, to show the effects of either, but I expect only selective spell or lingering evocations can be used with lingering spell, I would like to know which one, however.

from what i gather looking at others trying to extend spell lingering spell...the answer is the original spell is still instantaneous. so you can apply select spell. lingering evocation does not apply.

That's a good argument, thanks
