consecrate spell and altars

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

The consecrate spell gets a boost if there's an altar or shrine nearby. But it says "altar, shrine, or other permanent fixture." What defines a permanent fixture? 40lbs? 75lbs? How do you make a fixture permanent?

Shadow Lodge

anyone?

Fixed to the ground so it doesn't move. Actual size/weight doesn't matter -- it could be a 30'x30' Great Altar of Pergamum or a little one foot high tree dedicated to Gozreh.

As a GM, I'd probably allow a chapel on a ship or something like that. The general intent is that you shouldn't be able to carry it arround.

Specifically, I'm looking for one to Hanspur. Since he's a god of waterways, having a small shrine on a boat sounds good. But that region is big on things being ... not easily portable, but not that hard to re-locate when you feel like moving.

Shadow Lodge

Hmm. The box for the exorcism kit counts for a consecrate spell. Would it also count for a desecrate spell? (assuming the correct god was chosen)

Or

It looks like the the exorcism kit's component is the portable altar from ultimate equipment. So it sounds like that is all that is needed for the consecrate / desecrate spell is the portable anchor. Does that sound right?

Hello?

Grand Lodge

"Portable" is an opposite term to "permanent" and "fixed". If the author of the exorcism kit thought a portable altar qualifies as a focus for consecrate, I would regard that as an error in the secondary source. If it's a special rule for a new item, it does what it says it does and doesn't extend to desecrate.

Shadow Lodge

I've been told that Holy is used as shorthand for both Holy and Unholy. Thought that Consecrate might be the same thing.

Both spells simply refer to "If the [consecrated/desecrated] area contains an altar, shrine, or other permanent fixture dedicated to your deity or aligned higher power, the modifiers given above are doubled" so if the box works for one, it should automatically work for the other, especially for a neutral god.

The kit:
This reinforced wooden box bears the symbol of a specific goodaligned deity, which the buyer may stipulate at the time of purchase. The kit contains 1 dose of abjurant saltUE, which is used to create good-aligned barriers; 3 vials of holy water, which can be used against undead creatures or evil outsiders; and a pouch of silver dust worth 25 gp, which is a material component of the spell consecrate. An exorcism kit also counts as an altar for the purposes of determining bonuses and penalties for the spell consecrate.

Ah! Found it. Symbol of a goodaligned diety. So, that rules the kit out for desecrate. But it may set precedent for the portable altar being used.

Permanently fixed is a useless term. It's mounted into the ground? Excavate it out. It's heavy? Get someone stronger. It may be difficult, but it's pretty much impossible to permanently make something stay put in this game.

Hanspur's shrines are built onto boats. If the portable altar doesn't work, I can just buy a boat with the shrine on it, and tool around with that. If we're too far from the river, I put the boat in a wagon and have it carted around.

You're overthinking things.

See the Feat Create Reliquary Arms And Shields.

It is easy to create a portable 'alter' if you will... the problem isn't necessarily the portability of the alter, its that consecrate does not move with it, its stationary once cast.

That people can create such effects on a moving ship is a different discussion relevant to any emanation.

So no portable consecrate/desecrate effects, but if you want to cast such a spell any old place, then use the above feat to create an appropriate (or use the afore mentioned exorcism box) item that will power up your spell when you do cast it as long as you stay within the area.

Shadow Lodge

That is awesome. And I would totally snatch it up if this wasn't for a PFS character (no crafting feats allowed).

New week. Any new ideas?
