Centaur Cavalier?

Advice

Would it be plausible to have a centaur cavalier? If it is, how would that work out do you think?

Not only is it possible, there's one pictured in the ARG.

Obviously with the stock cavalier the mount aspect would not be relevant. It's an example of what happens when you move away from the biped humanoid norm. certain things will not work as normal.

Other cavalier aspects should work as normal some you'll just have to remember that the centaur is essentially always mounted.

Trade in your mount for a cohort, then have him ride you with a lance, while you also charge with a lance! Triple kill!

(this seems pretty cheesy, and I'm not sure how many DMs would let it fly.)

One rule I have used since 3.0 was that quadrupeds of -taur types count as mounted for the purposes of feats and abilities other than higher ground as long as they are not grappled, tripped or helpless. Now that -taur type creatures also have the Undersized Weapons trait I think allowing them the higher ground bonus against smaller creatures is reasonable.

This came up when a player made a hybsil ranger in a game I ran.

Since centaurs are more powerful than humans, it might not Abe a bad trade to simply have the centaur be its own mount for purposes of the class feature.

Centaur often take offense to anyone attempting to ride them as if they were a horse. In dire need or emergency exceptions can be made of course and my centaur ranger has made such exceptions a couple times during my game play.

I agree with SenahBirdR about allowing the mounted type feats to apply even though there is no rider.

Not all Centaur take offense to anyone riding them.. I played a Centaur a while back and had no problem with the pretty Elf sorceress riding me

This not true of Pathfinder though.

Also, they use medium sized weapons.

Isn't it usually supposed to be the other way around?

On-topic, I agree with the others about letting centaurs be their own mounts, especially with Undersized Weaponry.

As for racial traits: they have +1 natural armor, a 10-foot space, and two hooves as natural weapons. Using the 4-RP Advanced ability score modifier with +2 to all physical, a +4 to Wisdom, and a -2 to Intelligence, the default centaur seems to use a 13-point buy. If you just give them a human's +2 to one chosen stat and give them your preferred point-buy, it likely won't be a problem.
