Assuming they have an Int of 3+, there's no restriction saying they can't. Just keep in mind that racial traits and race traits are two very different things.
i know, i have adopted to get the helpful (halfling) trait on my wolf ac, and a discussion came up about the legality of it. i'm trying to find a RAW no answer, not just an opinion on why they shouldn't be able to

Is its master (your character) a halfling? If yes, I wouldn't see why it was inappropriate. If no, it still might be okay but harder to explain.

I took it on my Bodyguard bonded mount for my paladin.
It's legal; albeit a bit cheesy, but legal. You may get some eye-rolling from GMs. There is another trait from Chronicles of the righteous or Champions of Purity that is not halfling based that is a +1 to aid other.
Then again, I feel it makes about as much sense as cavalier's mounts who take Dragon Style to charge through allies.

I'm just seeing a halfling family sitting down to dinner, with a wolf in a party hat sitting in one of the chairs. The two heads of the family hold each other hands tenderly as a bunch of halfling children run screaming around the burrow
"Son, there's something we have to talk about. I'm sure by now you've noticed that you're a little.. different from our other children and we think you're old enough to know..."

Body guard is specifically something your critter can do, and knows how to do
As for dragon style, the funny thing is that running and charging over difficult terrain is specifically something mounts are trained for. Those fancy dressage moves you may have seen mitt romneys horse doing look dainty and silly, but they're really for squashing peasants under their hooves and walking over their mangled bodies.

I'd totally watch that at the Olympics if they put the peasants back in.

yes, my character is a halfling. also has the trait for what its worth
so no one has a problem with this???
just wanna double check. Ive had a person or 2 say if i tried this at their table, they wouldn't allow it, but i think i'm ok
any reason an animal companion COULDN'T take additional traits and get adopted?

Like I mentioned above, I have had GMs roll their eyes about it, because honestly, it is a bit cheesy. But like Seth and others stated above, it is 100% legal any way you look at it. Anything else is GM fiat.
Whether the GM fiat is a problem for you or not, that is up to you. If you play with the same GM every week, and he doesn't warm up to the idea of it, then it may create friction.
I tried to give you another option (Helpful (combat) from Champions of Purity) to do the same without having to use Adopted for a similar effect.
