What class to bring into an existing campaign

Advice

Hey all, I'm pretty new to Pathfinder and I need a new character to bring into an existing campaign. The character would need to fit into an established group (lvl 7-8).

The group composition is currently:

Samurai
Monk
Summoner
Rogue
Wizard

There was a cleric but they are apparently out of the picture now. I've been reading that Clerics are not optimal though? Any PF core, and PF published works are useable for character creation. Thanks in advance.

Clerics not optimal? Clerics are among the best classes in the game. Building a non-optimal cleric is a challenge in itself.

As the group is lacking divine caster, I'd suggest either cleric or oracle. Don't let yourself be reduced to healing spells. There's A LOT more to both classes. Check the guides in the sticky for further advice.

How are Clerics not optimal? They are one of the best classes and can be built in a number of interesting ways. The group does not have an option for healing currently so that would be the best addition. If you mean a cleric is not the optimal healer, this is true there are better healers out there (Life Oracle). However, if you don't want to be a band-aid and still heal a cleric is a great option.

I recommend a bard! Bard are amazing 6th party members they flesh out the party perfectly they have healing spells plus a bard is useful in almost any situation and if you pathfinder chronicler or lore master you will remain very useful to the group.

Just an idea though ^_^

Thanks all, I will dig into the cleric and life oracle. :)

I hate using 3PP material, but Spell Finesse pretty much breaks clerics and makes them optimal.
Clerics are considered non optimal in PF because of one main reason: MAD.
Because they lost heavy armor proficiency, a lot of people feel you need to buy into a higher DEX score to compensate for the lost AC, in addition to that, channeling is much more useful than turn undead was (beyond divine feats but those aren't a factor here) which means you don't wanna dump CHA either. Between those two stats being more of a necessity than they were in 3.5, a lot of people who were used to the 3.0-3.5 cleric find the new and updated cleric class to be sub par and less optimal.

Are you rolling for stats, or using a point buy? What level are you starting at? What kind of magic items are available? What skills matter in this DMs game? Does the wizard already have knowledge (religion) maxed? These questions all matter a lot to how you should build a character to fit into this party's needs.
