Race and Class ability stacking

Rules Questions

I think I know the answer but it is always best to ask. I have a character that receives Energy Resistance/Fire 5 and am thinking of taking a level in a class that would also give him Energy Resistance/Fire 5. My understanding is that these would not stack. Is that correct?

That's correct, I believe, because essentially they are the same ability.

Yes
I'm only answering to provide further reasoning.
Energy resistances of the same kind do not stack. In any instance where you gain the same resistance from two sources, you use whichever is higher. So in the OP example, I'd say pick a different race or just suffer one class ability to be useless. I think I encountered this with a Tiefling Sorceror.

Or, he could use the ARG to exchange that trait.

Make your life easy - go low-magic and rule that all bonus types stack. No, your characters won;t have 15 magical pieces of gear each that they can buy, sell and trade like bubblegum cards, but they also won't lose out on the benefits of their race, their class, their feats, etc. because the 'bonus types' don't line up right.

Two shields don't protect you better than one? A Shield spell and a shield used at the same time don't provide more protection than one or the other alone? What about multiple shield spells? A creature that is naturally resistant to fire is exactly the same as a creature that is naturally resistant to fire AND has further inured himself against fire through training and experience?

Non-stacking bonuses are one of the rare banes in this game IMO.

Well, since the character is a Pathfinder Society character I can't make minor tweaks to the rules to make the abilities stack. So that wouldn't work. And it is a Teifling Sorcerer so I believe that the abilities are from the same source. Since his resistances come from his bloodline and his bloodline matches his race I was pretty sure that the ability would overlap.

However I'd like to report that the ER of 5 was more than enough to save my butt repeatedly this afternoon at a PFS event. Most of the other players were rather taken back when my 'half-elf' kept laughing maniacally every time I got hit with scorching rays and burning hands spells. Quite fun.

I have an NPC that is a dhampir, but is going to pose as human.

Should be interesting...
