in the UM, vermin companions have an intelligence of "-". If a paladin has a vermin companion does it have an intelligence of 6 or -?
Is it because you believe the rules for the paladin are over riding the non-intelligent "-", or because the rules for the vermin companions non-intelligence "-" are over riding the intelligence of 6? Why do you believe which over rides which?

Normally a paladin can't get a vermin as a Divine Bond. So please explain first how you're getting vermin as an avilable companion.
Firstly I would say that since the paladin is supposed to have the companion as a mount, the companion would have to be big enough to ride. So at least medium size. Also, if you look under the rules it says vermin animal companions can have their intelligence increased at which point they loose the mindless quality. If you somehow can obtain a vermin mount companion it has an int of 6 and looses the mindless quality and otherwise follows the rules as a druid vermin companion would.

Is there a vermin companion big enough to be a mount? If there is, I'd say that the specifics of the Paladin ability supercede and, if you have a vermin as a mount, its Int would be boosted from - to 6 just as a Horse would be boosted from 2 to 6. I suppose a small paladin could train a giant scorpion as a mount; might be an interesting concept.

When ever the campanion reaches size large, the old companion can be dismissed and the new one chosen. That is how I understand it. It is not a problem of dismissing an animal companion at any time and choosing another companion later. It is a matter of when it is done. Particularly, at what level the paladin is at when getting the new companion?

So, what you are saying, a paladin at seventh level who is size medium gets the first scorpion vermin companion with an intelligence of 6, the companion has 18 tricks as a new model right off the retail shelf. This is how other players are doing this. The rules say you can dismiss one companion in order to get another companion. There is no restriction on this as I understand it.

Where do the rules say a paladin can choose vermin?
This mount is usually a heavy horse (for a Medium paladin) or a pony (for a Small paladin), although more exotic mounts, such as a boar, camel, or dog are also suitable.
Basically anything else is a GM's call. There is no rule for it because the rules never assumed a vermin would be taken.

In PFS they are saying if you can ride it it can be a mount.

Yeah, since a scorpion is large at lvl 7, if you un-bond your mount at lvl 7 and trade it for a giant scorpion, you'd get a large giant scorpion which a medium character could ride and, presumably, it could learn up to 18 tricks, just as any other mount you select could.

Wow! This is ballin, I think I will retrain my paladin in PFS and get the scorpion for his 60' tremorsense. If I remember right, I would have to put a rank in linguistics and give him the language common so he would understand it. My problem would be how can I have him communicate that he feels something is hiding. Empathy can be ruled very loosely and limited in him telling me what is exacty there, or what it looks like and size. He can't speak common.
I still have to use handle animal in order to get the companion to use his tricks. I can't just say things to the companion and have him do tasks for me. I can't remember where I found this, I wish I could find this on the website but I imagine this is arcane and esoteric information. I tried but I can't find it in the faqs or messageboards. Anyway, I appreciate your all's advice.

Its fairly clear paladins have a very limited selection of mounts. The introducrion of vermin did not change this.
Wven rangers have to take an archetype to get insect companion.
Think about it this way if it worked like you think why are paladin riding big cats all over the place?
Because they can only take what the paldin entry says they can.

Rereading the PFS faq you must have access to the animal. A small detail I have over looked. So, that is the next question, besides chronicles, where can I have access to the exotic animals? You see there is a player with such an exotic vermin in PFS. I was wondering if this was legal. I couldn't find any rule that says otherwise. In a normal campaign you should be able to have a large scorpion animal companion. I don't see why not relating all this to PFS.
I belong to an ongoing campaign and we rotate GM's. One of us wishes to run another home campaign and an angel Aasimar paladin with oath's of vengeance and against fiends is something I wish to play. The question is, do I wish for an animal, or vermin companion or not.
Thanks for the ammunition, I now see I can get rid of the all seeing vermin companion in PFS. I don't think there is any access in any chronicle or additional resources. Sometimes you just don't see all the caveats and details in doing research. I haven't played every module PFS offers though.
If something comes along like this and I don't see why it shouldn't work I generally leave it and research it out later. I have been wrong before and I don't wish to discourage someone from playing as if I'm being rude. It has happened before and with volunteer organizations being rude to others is not what I wish to accomplish. We have thrown such players out of the store before for repeated obnoxious behavior.
