Multiclass archetypes benefits

Rules Questions

So I'm a first time poster long time lurker and I've been searching the boards for an answer to this question.

I'm trying to create an tank inquisitor who is lvl 2. What I did was multiclass as a fighter1/inquisitor1 and chose the archetypes shielded fighter and preacher for each one. I was wondering if I continued leveling in inquisitors, would I still get the benefits of shielded fighter archetypes? I.e. For shielded fighter there is a bonus that you get when your character is lvl 3. Do I need to be a lvl 3 fighter to get the bonus or just lvl 3 in General?

Archetypes modify the classes they're attached to. Think of it as sticky labels you paste over the existing class abilities as directed. So the "At 3rd level, ..." in the Shielded Fighter's Active Defense is pasted on top of the standard Fighter's "Starting at 3rd level, ..." in Armor Training. Since all class abilities are written to refer to levels in that class, you get neither Armor Training nor Active Defense until you take your third level of Fighter.

Building on what has been said, that does also mean that if either of those archetypes give you something at 2nd level, you do not have access to that yet. The number of levels of a particular class you have are called "class levels," and the total of all your class levels is referred to as "player level." Be sure not to mix those up when reading abilities, feats, traits, etc.
