An idea my friends have been slinging around for the past few weeks is building a party that consists solely of bards and running a short, jovial adventure that would last a few sessions.
I could use some help coming up with story ideas. Naturally they would be some sort of travelling act or circus troupe. What sort of things would be good to throw at them?

Hamlet except instead of allowing himself to be sent to England the prince runs off with the actors. (Bard is the PC version of Aristocrat so if you trust one of your players with the role of living mcguffin he'll fit right in)
The campaign consists of fleeing from town to town trying to prevent anyone from realizing that your newest actor is the prince of Denmark. Lots of disguise and stealth and social stuff, a fair bit of dealing with the underworld and running from guards and dodging assassins and a few odd wilderness encounters in the gaps.

Battle of the bands.
The bards know eachother before the adventure and have a band that is "going to make it big... someday." Their band name is taken from what they thought was a long dead god/goddess of music, but it turns out the powerful entity was simply waiting for the right melodies to come together to form a worthy band of worshipers. Now, imbued with divine purpose (and maybe a handful of homebrewed thematic abilities), the band embarks on an epic journey to a secret otherworldly battle of the bands; the first mortals to do so in a thousand years.
Along the way, they have to defeat would be roadies from opposing bands of celestial, infernal, or elemental origins; they must perform at smaller venues to gain the patronship of powerful allies for the final battle; and they must dodge the long arm of the law, seeking to bring them to justice for the trail of destruction and unexplained phenomenon they leave in their wake.
Grab some dice, pop open a cold one, and crank up the jams for this epic tail of unlikely heroes. D20 Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll!

You can't stop the music!
Dude, this party sounds like any number of bands that made movies in the 70's and 80's...
Think of Kiss and the Phantom of the Park, some kind of freaky Partridge Family, or even Josie and the Pussycats.
Go for nostalgia.

Or even Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo instead of saving the community centre from developers with rap and some breakin, a bunch of bardic dancers need to save a town from marauding Orcs via a dance off and poetry slam.

I think the Blues Brother has some general stuff in it to draw upon. At least for the game's backstory.
The otherworldly Battle of the Bands idea is pretty good too. There could be a number of different "bands" (an fey band, an undead band, a demon band, etc.) they have to defeat in a battle that is equal parts physical, magical, and musical.
