Will we be ok?

Rise of the Runelords

I have the lucky of being a PC in a game with a new GM. I talked him into running RotRL, since its supposed to be friendly for newer people. I am normally the GM. I have ran Burnt offerings, so I know what to expect from that, but besides reading back ground stuff I don't know the encounters beyond that. Is our party make up able to stand a chance at succeeding?

Im a Dwarf Cleric of Desna with Luck and Travel domains focusing on casting and using reach weapons.

the rest are
A Human Druid with a Leopard Animal companion.
A Elf Alchimest
A Elf Rouge, focusing on 2 weapon daggers and sneak attacks.
A Half Elf Wizard focusing on blast spells
and A Half Elf ranger, Long bow focus.

We have lots of damage output, but no real damage soaker or tank. For now the druid or his Leopard have been the ones in front, with the rouge getting flanking. I stand behind the Druid with his Shillelagh spell going, I keep Touch of luck on him and use my reach weapon for any AoO. Works well for goblins and a random encounter we had with a dire boar. Im just worried for later books of RotRL, is my worry undue?

Thanks

I should add that we are only able to use Core and APG at this point in time.

You'll be fine. Pathfinder is not a game which requires 'tanking' in the MMO sense - damage output is preferrable in most cases. RotR can get hairy if you have no casters, especially divine casters, but you do so there won't be any trouble.

You'll be surprised at how effective a Druid and his animal companion can be at holding the line, especially if the Druid reinforces the line with Summoned Animals. if the Half-elven Ranger also goes with an animal companion then you'll have several units that can toe the line long enough for the others to be effective.

Speaking of which... the Elven Rogue may consider taking several levels of either Fighter or Ranger. Indeed, unless he's already taken two-weapon fighting, I'd say get two levels of Ranger to get the two-weapon feat, and then continue focusing on Rogue. Those Ranger levels will provide some nice hit points and feats (having either Humans or Giants as a Favored Enemy would be useful for the +2) while also providing a goodly amount of skill points.

Also, the Half-elven Ranger might consider taking one level of Sorceror or Wizard... and then going Arcane Archer. :)

Thanks guys, Yes we will have a little bit of divine casting going on. The ranger stated that he was not going to have a animal companion. Will pass on the other bits to the group about the multi classing.

No fighter no problem. Druid tanks have been around for ages and do just as good of a job as a fighter or barbarian so long as they have time to buff and summon. That being said, when you guys reach the last few adventures you should watch out because if the druid gets KOed by a surprise then your party will be reeling and needing you to heal them ALOT.

Grand Lodge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

No disrespect meant, but I hate the idea that "tanks" have entered the lexicon of role-play. I understand its purpose, but just hate having seen it happen.

That said, your party will do fine. Alchemists are downright terrifying at their damage output. They absolutely destroy large swaths of bad guys. Hopefully the druid will aid the rogue or they might be in for some trouble. Massed range generally means one person gets to become the living tent stake at times and rogues do not stand up to that very well. Hopefully the ranger will assist in that at times, or at the very least I second what Tangent101 suggested in adding in ranger to the rogue class.

Having a 6 player group means that all the GM really has to do is add a scrub or two to some of the encounters and/or give the bad guys max hit points. Stay together and be smart and you should be okay. When you get the "Im tired of waiting on the other players so I go look for trouble," attitude it can be quickly squashed.

Liberty's Edge

Your Ranger should take an Animal Companion (the bond with other PCs is not worth it). More precisely a mount. They make archers devastating.

If he can get the GM to grant him a flying mount, it is even better.

Our group in RotRL looks pretty much like yours and we fare OK.

I passed on this info to some of our group, we have a facebook group going on. I think the ranger is interested in the Arcane Archer. Our wiz was talking about taking 1 lvl of sorc and going Dragon Disciple.

I am considering something. My cleric was going to be more caster and shying away from burting. In the end I have a Char of 8. If im bursting, its to save someone from death, and I do not have selective channel, so everyone getting heals. But since its not really my thing, is there any real down side for taking the Prestige class of lore master at lvl 9? I get my lvl 8 domain stuffs, and I keep getting my caster lvls, plus a lot more feats. Seems like I get a lot for the cost of decreased healing from my burst that I cant do many times anway.
