So, for those of you ladies and gentlemen who have read Stolen Lands and have seen the Stag Lord's backstory, do you believe that redemption is possible for the character? Is it a desirable outcome? Or is the Stag Lord such a self-loathing misanthrope that you believe any attempt to bring him to goodness (or at least try to convert him from evil to neutral) would be futile?
I mean, if the Stag Lord could be redeemed he would make a fantastic addition to the government of the new Kingdom that the PCs build (probably as the Royal Assassin/Enforcer). If and when I run Kingmaker, I plan on making the Stag Lord's redemption a possibility, if the players desire to do so.
Any thoughts on the matter?

Yeah - it's gotta take more than an "oh, I rolled 30 on my diplomacy"...
This guy's been in serious hate & self loathing land for a long time - the
party should have to crawl over broken glass to redeem him.
Perhaps if they can subdue him & then spend time reasoning with him &
winning...over a period of time (i.e. not a week, or even a month...).
If my guys had wanted to, I'd have allowed it - but not without time,
patience...or some serious magic - the likes of which they won't have at
these levels...

In my campaign, the Stag Lord was revealed (after his death at the hands of the party) to be the last heir to House Rogarvia. (Obviously, his backstory was changed; his father, for instance, was excised completely.) He ended up as a companion for the paladin, who died during the battle with him, as she navigated the afterlife on her way to resurrection. He came back with her, and is now a PC after I recruited a player to play as him.
It's pretty nifty. Akiros was also made into a PC; they tend not to trust each other very much, and don't ever - ever - talk about their shared sins.

The great thing about kingmaker is that you have lots of time for things like redeeming Staggy!
Indeed. I just find him such an interesting character and would hate to kill him off. He just reminds me a great deal of The Hound from Game of Thrones. If he could be redeemed and/or come to view the player characters as friends, he could be a fearsome ally and minion of the party.

He had a bad childhood (that's putting it lightly), and a horrible dad.
I figure showing him compassion would have at least some effect on him.
It's bad enough in RL that often brutal assaults are explained with the one doing it having had a bad childhood.
A lot of people had a bad childhood any still are social and valuable members of society. I do not need that way of thinking in my fantasy games.Every one is responsible for his own actions. A beaten child can decide to not start beating up people himself. There are two ways: "I've been beaten so I hurt others, too." or "I didn't like being beaten so I don't do it to others."

You do realize that the Stag Lord was basically tortured since he was a kid by his insane jerk of a father?
That's what I meant when I said "putting it lightly", dude. Not everyone is beaten within an inch of their life as kids.
I know it, I read the description in the AP. But not every body who IS tortured like that has to become a psychopath. And if he should be held responsible.
Nowadays wrongdoers are often better protected than victims. And that is plain wrong. Victims should be protected and given into medical or psychological care. But that is not what's done.
But I guess I've derailed this thread long enough.
