Just want to make sure I'm using the ready an action mechanic correctly.
I am putting a serious time constraint on my PC's for a planned encounter. I want it to unfold with a heightened sense of urgency.
Picture a scenario where the Party as to clear out a building in the same manner that a SWAT team would; "clearing" rooms as they move in and through the complex.
So, can the PC's "ready" their standard action (to make an attack), and still take their move action?
Having read the rules over a few times this seems like it would be perfectly permissible.
Just want to be sure.

"Ready an action" is a Standard action that lets you perform a standard action, a move action, a swift action, or a free action which happens at the onset of the contingencies you specify; since it is a Standard action, you can totally use a move action in the same turn.
Bonus: if your "move" action was used for something other than ambulatory purposes, you make take a 5-ft. step as part of your readied action.

Sorry for thread necro. I'd like to ask, say if you're wiwlding a honking reach weapon and have combat reflexes, but do not threaten at 5 ft. What would happen in the following situation, where you have moved and are threatening a wizard with a dagger in his hand?
You decide with your standard action you shall ready move to keep a distance of 10 ft from wizard.
Situation A:
1) The wizard moves back 30 ft. As he moves back, you trip him, keeping him in your threatened range.
2) He tries to cast a spell(but does not cast defensively). You aoo him and interrupt his spell.
Situation B:
1) The wizard 5 ft backwards, and attempts to cast a spell. Unfortunately for the wizard, your readied action kicks in, and he's still in range of your reach weapon. If he does not cast defensively, you can aoo him and interrupt his spell.
Situation C - If you started your combat round threatening the wizard with your reach weapon and did not make any move action, but readied action remains as described above.
1) The wizard, seeing you have a reach weapon, 5 fts foward towards you. Your readied actionkicks in. Can you choose to 5 ft step so you will not provoke for your movement? Or must you make a move action, and provoke for your movement, giving the wizard an aoo withhis dagger.

Situation A is not a readied action, it is two AoOs.
1) Wizard moves 30' provoking an AoO. He doesn't get past the threat range of your weapon.
2) He casts while on the ground and you AoO. Don't forget that interrupting his spell is then dependent upon the his concentration check.
Situation B1: The Wizard 5' stepping does not provoke even if you do move to put him in your threat range. There is no AoO for his movement although there may be if he is in your threat range when he casts.
Situation C1: Since you have already moved on your turn you cannot take a 5' step as part of a readied action.
Additionally, even if you had not moved on your turn, you must make your "Move" move action. The 5' step can be PART of a readied action but since your readied action was "Move" it cannot be part of a "Move" move action.

Good point. I'll probably get spiked armor, and move next to casters so unless they cast defensively, use swift action spells, or have ways to teleport/gain total concealment without provoking they'll eat aoos. Thanks Gauss, you've been very helpful.
What happens if on the other hand, you're a witch, and are busily maintaining cackle on a fighter. Can you ready an action to move 30 ft away as soon as the fighter comes within 15 ft of you?

Regarding 'swift action' spells, they provoke AoOs just like any other spell. Only certain cases of swift action spells (ie: Quickened spells) do not provoke.
You do not need to specify 30' distance. You only need to specify the trigger and the action. In this case "if the fighter comes within 15' of me I move".
And yes, Cackle is a Move action leaving you a standard action to ready your readied action with.
