So one of my players (an Aasimar Clouded Vision Oracle of Life) has developed a real fondness for Helgarval. Long and the short of it is he pretty much constantly wears 'Helm-garval' to benefit from the Protective Aura, as well as let the helm see things further than 60' away and tell him what's out there.
My main question is: When he/they get hit with Area effect spells, should Helm-garval be treated as equipment, and thus not worried about for taking damage etc. in most cases, OR should he be a separate creature, and thus probably not with the party much longer before the Fireballs, Cones of Cold and (especially) Unholy Blights send him (back) to heaven (or elysium, or Shelyn's realm, or wherever)?

He's immune to cold and acid and has resistance 10 to fire and electricity. It takes 25 damage after that to kill him completely - a 34 damage fireball will bring him to -11 HP if he fails his save, which he can survive if healed by channel energy or similar.
I'd treat him as a creature. Eventually he'll die or the group will decide to leave him behind for his own safety. If you're not OK with that, you could level him up after a while.

Second that!
The party's rogue/barbarian befriended Helgarval and put the creature on his head for much the same reasons mentioned above.
Btw, I made an extra char sheet for Helgarval in Small humanoid angel form because I didn't find a "monster sheet" in any of the Bestiaries. I'm curious: Did someone else anything like this?

I am playing a samurai in JR. I wear Helgarval as a helm and carry Suishen. From time to time, my gear gets in arguments with each other.
As it happens, the party's rogue/barbarian who "wears" Helgarval is temporarily in possession of Suishen and considers taking the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat next time he levels up.
The "arguments" are a good point, I'll consider. ;)
