white hair wich grapple help

Rules Questions

I am being told that maintaing a grapple with her hair does NOT use her int, but only affects the intial grapple check is this true????? I don't read it this way.

At 1st level, a white-haired witch gains the ability to use her hair as a weapon. This functions as a primary natural attack with a reach of 5 feet. The hair deals 1d4 points of damage (1d3 for a Small witch) plus the witch’s Intelligence modifier. In addition, whenever the hair strikes a foe, the witch can attempt to grapple that foe with her hair as a free action* without provoking an attack of opportunity, using her Intelligence modifier in place of her Strength modifier when making the combat maneuver check. When a white-haired witch grapples a foe in this way, she does not gain the grappled condition.

Ask the GM if this is true. IF it is not specifically adressed in the rules then I think its a fair assumption to say maintaining the grapple uses INT and not STR.

As an archtype what is written doesn't change/alter the normal grappling rules, just the grapple initiated by that attack.

So yes, strict RAW after your attack, maintaining the grapple would use your STR modifier. The archtype makes no allowance for using your INT mod for anything other than the attack. It is why some people consider the archtype a 'mess' or 'unplayable' as it is.

The wording is that you use INT instead of STR for the initial grapple. However, you still use STR to maintain the grapple and to keep the target from escaping.

This is still very useful, since you can keep a target locked into place and force them to lose a standard action just to escape. This is more useful when you get reach and aren't stuck next to an enemy that has nothing better to do than attack you. On the plus side, you don't have the AC penalty for being grappled (since you do not gain the condition) while the target has the penalty on to-hit for being grappled.

I also think this is pretty poorly written. I don't think that is the intent, but yes RAW says you switch to STR after the first round. If the GM is that anal about the letter of the law, you should point out that you get your STR bonus on your initial hit in addition to an INT bonus. I think this is a writing error also based on how prehensile hair works.
