Running Dawn of the Scarlet Sun?

Shattered Star

I was considering running Dawn of the Scarlet Sun after Curse of the Lady's Light, but then I noticed it's designed for 5th level heroes. The party's supposed to be 8th level when they return to Magnamar. Isn't that grossly underleveled for them?

DotSS is designed for six 5th level characters. Four characters should be 6th or 7th level. It's not too difficult to add a couple class levels to the villains, and possibly another

Spoiler:
wight
in the below-ground section.

My group ditched the Lady's before they even cleared level 1. That's when I popped Scarlet Sun's events on them. They didn't track down the murders though so I've had to orchestrate a demonic invasion of Magnimar as well as the city's defense. Next session will be them either saying "let the city deal with this" and heading back or pressing on to squash the demonic threat. I'm stoked!

Scarab Sages

Echoing what Tangent said, the encounters are pretty well set up to be challenging, so the opponents just need a couple class levels. One thing that worked well from a plot standpoint when I ran this was

Spoiler:
changing the patron from Shax to Shamira. Shamira is a succubus nascent demon lord whose followers' MO is to impersonate priestesses of good deities. I then added some duped people who fought against the PCs.

Amusingly enough, my party didn't even wait for the ambush. They rolled well enough with diplomacy to learn about an abandoned shrine at which point one player went off on the priest about allowing a shrine to be abandoned and how they always attract evil. ;) Sometimes I suspect my players are too genre-savvy. Though they won't know what's waiting for them inside. Heh heh heh. (That said, maybe I'll include a real captive priest in there as they'll suspect him of being evil...)
