My Pet Sword

Advice

Shadow Lodge

So, I was kicking around interesting ideas for my Bladebound Magus character, and I suddenly hit upon the idea of having my Magus's Black Blade take the form of a small animal (similar to a familiar) occasionally while not in combat. I like the idea of a beady-eyed crow perching on his his hand before spreading its wings and morphing into a jet-black scimitar for combat.

Sadly though, I'm not really sure if there's any way to do this. I certainly wouldn't want the animal form to be used for combat - just flavor. It's a Pathfinder Society character, though, so such a thing is probably only doable if I find a way to make it happen through game mechanics.

Any creative ways to pull this off? Would be a fun way to add some unique flavor to my character's concept.

In pathfinder society? Not a clue. In a home game? I actually made rules for this already and happen to use them.

I guess you could keep a completely mundane crow as a pet or use illusions/prestidigitation to pretend, but that's going out of your way.

Here's a page for creating intelligent items. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/intelligent-items

It doesn't have a direct answer for what you want, but it's a great place to guide a few options. For example, it costs 56,000 gold to let the item cast a single 4th level spell at will. Such as Beast Shape II. However, that is obscenely expensive for most levels, & other issues besides. Sadly there aren't listed costs for a 1st-3rd level spell at will. But I think asking to pay 4 grand to allow the black blade to cast silent image at will would be good.

I'd suggest asking for a favor from the DM. Remove something small from the class features, or simply let ya have the feature the way you want. So long as you don't abuse it, like having the thing scout etc. Luck!

Why not have your blade turn into a small accountant?

Pathfinder Society doesn't allow anything like that, everything must be 100% by the book.

:/

Look up the raktavarna. It's a tiny outsider that can take the form of a blade or other object. I believe there was a thread a while back about actually using them in combat.

Raktavarna is the way to go. Sadly i believe it was ruled you cannot enchant it, good thing you're a magus!

Did a bit of digging. Apparently you can get one as a familiar ala the AP the golden serpent and the creature can be counted as a masterwork weapon. In the AP it's a short sword.

While it's not a bird It is a pet weapon.

Can't get a familiar if your a black blade. Or at least I don't think you can. Sounds like a cool idea for a homegame though.
