Metamagic Master and Magical Lineage - Does this work?

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

I'm working on a Magus character for Pathfinder Society, and the combination of the Metamagic Master and Magical Lineage traits caught my eye. My intent would be to pick shocking grasp as my spell of choice for both of them, and start tossing out repetitive maximized shocking grasps through my scimitar at level four (using a second-level spell slot).

Is there any reason this won't work (including if there's some rule I don't know about that makes this an illegal choice for Pathfinder Society)?

Note, since this is an Organized Play character in the Pathfinder Society, "well i wouldn't allow it in my game" doesn't apply here - I'm looking for what the rules say directly.

Sidenote: Are there any other ways to get "cheaper" metamagic? I'd love to do this with first-level spell slots...

There is no such trait named "Metamagic Master". I would suggest you not use d20pfsrd as a reference for PFS.

As always, be sure you own the source you are getting the trait from.

If you used Magical Lineage and Wayang Spellhunter, your Maximized Shocking Grasps would take up a 2nd level spell slot. Neither of them is listed as a "trait bonus", so they would work together.

HERE is a previous discussion on the matter.

You know, the Metamagic Master trait has such an interesting-looking URL...

I can't help but wonder if it's the same trait, but referred to as something different so they could put it on the SRD... ;)

I'll buy the book if I choose to use it for my PFS character. Good to know the trick works as I interpreted it.

If your primary play scenario is PFS, yes, d20pfsrd.com is not the ideal solution since we include content from tons of sources. I recommend PathfinderCommunity.net, a "sister" site run by another d20pfsrd.com collaborator for PFS legal content.

It is exactly the same trait, with the name changed since we are no longer operating under the Community Use Policy.

What do you mean you are no longer operating under the Community Use Policy? What exactly does that mean?

Heh... yes, I know. That is what the winking smiley-face was trying to indicate... I was being facetious. Of course it's the same trait.

it lists whats legal in pfs with the little symbol next to feats / abilities / etc

So d20pfsrd cannot mention Wayangs any more? That is what the renaming would imply. If so -- they still have some work to do, since they have an entry for the Wayang race.

AFAIK Paizo "gently asked" pfsrd to keep anyting golarion-related out of their site. Since the mechanic are OGL the srd can still post all the stuff they want but they have to remove anything related to the golarion setting like wayang or aldori since that is copyrighted.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'll have to double-check but I think we CAN use the wayang name now since it appeared in the ARG. The trait was previously from a sourcebook that was Golarion-specific. We had changed some names that have since become OGC. Also, Paizo did not have to ask for us to remove the content, the terms of the Community Use Policy and the Compatibility License dictate that. All Paizo did was inform us that since we opened the store they now considered us "commercial" and as such could not operate under the CUP.

On a related note, in Pathfinder Society, would I be able to take the Wayang Spellhunter trait if I were playing as a Human or Tiefling?

Sczarni

It's a regional trait, and not race specific.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated!

I suppose if you call it Spell Hunter it would convey much the same meaning. (I.e. you are skilled at using a low level spell to hunt and provision yourself *presumably silent spell is key here*)
