Elemental body water

Rules Questions

So, I am super confused about one thing. elementals don't breathe. Thus using after using a elemental body spell you do not need to breath. But for some reason when you turn into a water elemental you gain the ability to breathe water?! I don't understand! Does anyone know something I don't and ca clear up this mystery for me

While creatures of the Elemental subtype don't need to breath, you aren't an elemental. You may look like an elemental, but you are not an elemental. You are still a creature of your original type and subtype. So you still need to breathe.

The various polymorph spells and abilities only give exactly what the individual abilities say, and the general rules of all polymorph abilities. A change of type or subtype is not one of those benefits.

Read the transmutation school again. It states if the new form grants a swim or burrow speed you gain the ability to breathe while swimming or burrowing.
