Ok, so I want to get a confirmation on this.

I want to cast as a 12th level sorcerer an Intensified Empowered Maximized (Maximize spell via a lesser rod) Scorching Ray. This sorcerer has spell specialization in Scorching Ray, and has the Gnome Pyromancer archetype. This sorcerer also has the Magical Lineage (scorching ray)trait.

Assuming all To-Hit rolls are successful, what damage dice will I be rolling per Ray, and what level spell slot is used up?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Firstly: Intensified does nothing for Scorching Ray. Intensify increases the maximum damage dice by 5 levels. This works for spells like fireball which have a 1d6 dice per caster level and a 10d6 max. So a plain level 12 sorc could cast 12d6 intensified fireballs. But does not function for scorching ray which has set damage dice per ray. So this adds nothing.

Gnome Pyromancer adds +1 Caster level to fire spells. but since intinsify doesn't function and you already have reached the maximum of 3 scorching rays at level 11, this again adds nothing.

So in the end you are left with a 3 bolts of fire which are empowered and maximized at 4d6 each. Which equates to 3*(4*6+2*6) = 108 damage.

Scorching Ray, caster level 12th:
3 rays, 4d6 points of damage.

Intensified Spell doesn't do anything, since scorching ray does not have a maximum number of damage dice per caster level, it's always just 4d6.

Empowered plus Maximized changes damage to 24+2d6 for every ray.

Spell Specialization does not do anything, since the spell is at it's maximum effect at 11th level. Increasing your effective CL from 12th to 14th doesn't change a thing.

I don't know of a gnome pyromancer.

The spell slot for an Empowered Scrorching Ray that is maximized with a lesser rod, is 3rd with Magical Lineage.

For Scorching Ray:

Intensified +1 (nothing)
Empowered +2 (add 2 damage dice 6d6 instead of 4d6)
Maximized +3 (free for rod) (24 flatdamage)

Gnome Pyro (Archetype) - didnt find it, is it core?
Magical Lineage (-1 to metamagic)

- At level 12th: 3 rays
- Each ray: 24 +2d6 level 4th slot

Empowered and Maximized act separated.

Hope that helps!

I think Yora hast the right of the empowered spell.

I believe when you cast an empowered maximized spell, you roll it normally, take half the result, and add it to the maximum possible damage.

This is great! So, if this gnome Sorcerer is of the Draconic bloodline, he will get an additional +1 damage for every die. Thus bringing the total per Empowered Maximized Ray to:

(4d6+4)+(2d6+2) Per Ray

OR: 28+14=42 damage x3 for 126 total?

Err, not exactly.

It should be (Maximized(4d6+4))+((4d6+4)/2), or 28+((4d6+4)/2)

It might reduce to the same thing, I'm feeling too lazy to check, but as written, you're supposed to roll normal damage and reduce my half to figure your empower bonus on an empowered+maximized spell.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When you maximize and empower, you don't maximize the empowered part, you do each separately.

So, you'd deal 24 plus half of whatever you roll on 4d6.
