Has Paizo ever published a updated table for which classes count as "key" for monsters being advanced with class levels?
The current table,
Table: Monsters with Class Levels
Monster Role | Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger | Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard | Bard, Rogue | Monk, Paladin
Combat | Key | — | — | —
Spell | — | Key* | — | —
Skill | Key | — | Key | —
Special | — | — | — | —
* This class is only key if its spellcasting levels stack with those possessed by the creature.
Obviously, this only reflects the core classes. Antipaladins, Cavaliers (and Samurai), Gunslingers all qualify as combat, Ninja's as skill, and Oracles and Witches as Casters. Alchemists and Magi are less clear to me.
So here I am contemplating a redcap with either Alchemist or Magus levels...
| Yora |
Since both cleric and druids are listed as spellcasters and are really good frontline fighters, I think the magus would fit in that category very nicely as well.
Alchemist could either be grouped with the spellcasters, or with the skill types, like a bard. Since a bard is all about spells, bardic music, and also some talking skills, I think the Alchemist is most similar to that.
The Redcap I would class as a Combat monster. And at least Alchemist very clearly is not a combat class.
With Magus levels it becomes a bit trickier. Everything the redcap brings to the character are traits that do benefit a magus quite well. There is nothing that a magus could not make use of. So I would say, at least for a Redcap, treat magus as a key class to determine CR.
