Question regarding familiars...

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

So first off, hey everyone, new to the community, I hope I'll be able to help just as much, if not more, than you help me.

But firstly I had a couple questions regarding familiars that might seem a little abstract.

I want to get a Psedodragon as a familiar at level seven. Do I need to do any rituals to gain a specific familiar, do I need to encounter one and do some sort of persuasion, or do I just get one or work in some back story for why it's with me?

Second, the dragon type has alot of class skills for it, including craft... Can my Psedodragon craft items? If so, is there any way to help it craft magic items? My DM probably wouldn't allow me to exchange out it's only feat (as some players have suggested to do for feats in general), but with UMD and spellcraft all he would need is caster levels and the require feat right? Is there any way to accomplish those?

Third, I've read mixed opinions on the Psedodragon's poison. The two statements in question are:

universal monster rules says wrote:
Poison (Ex or Su) A creature with this ability can poison those it attacks. The effects of the poison, including its save, frequency, and cure, are included in the creature's description. The saving throw to resist a poison is usually a Fort save (DC 10 + 1/2 poisoning creature's racial HD + creature's Con modifier; the exact DC is given in the creature's descriptive text).

and

PH wizard class says wrote:
Hit Dice: For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master's character level or the familiar's normal HD total, whichever is higher.

I'm interpreting that the poison is affected by my character's hit dice. Correct?

Finally, I haven't researched too far into this one, but what do you guys think of Pseudodragons flying around with wands and using them? I guess it's related to the crafting thing, but would they be physically able with their claws to manipulate objects to that degree? Or would it be more of a "get the evolution feat and house rule 'evolve hands' in" type of thing?

Hello, and welcome aboard!

You need to perform "a specialized ritual that costs 200 gp per wizard level". Nothing else is specified, so the details depend on your GM.

Depends on your GM. And on yourself, so try proposing something cool to him/her/it. You do get to decide what kind of Familiar you get though. The GM only gets a veto, not a say in that.

No, not unless you manage to get it the required feats (which you can't, but there's a Witch archetype that can). It can help you craft though.

Yes and no. It's open to interpretation, so ask your GM.

Most of us seem to like the idea (I do), but you have to consult with your own GM if they're okay with it. Basicly what's needed is the ability to manipulate (and possibly aim) a wand, the ability to speak a command word, and either UMD or a spell list.

Thanks, that helps quite a bit,I'll have a few questions for my GM now, the crafting bit was probably pushing it as far as what familiars should be able to do, perhaps that would be in the grounds for an animal familiar...

If anyone else has any idea's on how to get feats for a familiar, and also to qualify them with caster levels, that'd be great.

Thanks for the help!

Familiars can't get feats normally, although animal companions do. There are weird prestige classes like diabolist and demoniac that let you get imp pets with item creation feats (spell like abilities can qualify as a caster level). The only one I can think of is evolved familiar and getting skilled for a +8 to UMD or whatever skill you want your pet to be really good at.

If your familiar is an animal you can use anthropomorphic animal, and then in will become bipedal and have opposable thumbs (can be made permanent). Pretty creepy though.

You could cast paragon surge through share spells on your familiar to give it a feat.
