Critique Request - Death Dagger

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm looking for feedback on this before I throw it at my players. Among other things, I want to make sure it seems reasonable and consistent with itself.

My target is either a CR 3 or CR 4, with the concept that this dagger keeps replicating itself and attacking the members of the party.

TIA.

Special Abilities
Doubling (Su) As a swift action, the death dagger can double into two identical daggers. The two daggers will attack the same target. If one is destroyed the remaining dagger can then double again. A pair would have to be destroyed in the same round.
+2 Magic The death dagger is a +2 dagger in all respects.

What's my motivation here? A dagger that is out to destroy the pcs after they killed his golem daddy? Is this a cursed treasure? It seems cool enough, just want to know what capacity you want to use it.

Good point. Basically it is to be used as a trap/guardian construct/animated object protecting a crypt. The operating instructions for it will be kill all living things that enter the chamber.

Have it appear as a set of two so when one "dies" the other replicates its match. Disguise it's magical aura, and give it a few minutes before it becomes active. Switch weapon spec for the teamwork feat precise strike and have them "sneak attack" the holder of them to start surprise combat round. Add instead of replace that feat at higher lvl. Make sure they are hard to grapple, but if they are pinned and separated by +30ft then they become dormant, otherwise they auto repair forever!

Byrdology, these are excellent ideas. Thank you.

Just working off of your great idea ;)
