channel energy with PC INSIDE monster

Rules Questions

does a channel energy burst apply to a player inside a monster? What if the huge monster has two holes in it where two characters have cut there way out?

Sczarni

It is a burst, so only if there is line of effect would the channel hit the character inside a monster. Normally the answer would be, "No".

Other than that, given your example of cutting holes in its stomach, it would probably be left up to the GM.

Strict reading would indicate that the character inside the monster wouldn't have line of effect to the channel energy.

I don't think it is much of a stretch to house-rule that the channel energy penetrates and any creature inside would benefit.

I am curious as to what other people think.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would follow the rule of "line of effect" and say no.

That is not an entire bad thing however since a fireball(just an example) dropped on a monster to kill it will also keep not affect you.

Dark Archive

The answer is no because you do not have line of effect, also if the creature has 2 holes in it from people cutting their way out there should not be anyone left inside as once a creature has cut their way out swallow whole is no longer available till the wounds have healed.

Sovereign Court

The critter might have more than two stomachs (if so, it will receive explicit mention in the description). However, if you're in one of the cut-open stomachs, why are you still in there? And if not, then obviously it's not really helping you.

Although if a GM ruled that at some point the monster's "Swiss Cheese Threshold" has been met and that swallowed creatures are now in LoE, I could accept that. Just make sure it applies to fireballs and channels consistently.
