SPECIAL ABILITIES
Heat (Su)An enraged remorhaz generates heat so intense that anything touching its body takes 8d6 points of fire damage. Creatures striking a remorhaz with natural attacks or unarmed strikes are subject to this damage, but creatures striking with melee weapons are not. The heat can melt or burn weapons; any weapon that strikes a remorhaz is allowed a DC 19 Fortitude save to avoid taking damage. The save DC is Constitution-based.
In a world of ice and snow, the remorhaz is particularly feared for the terrible fires that burn within its body. These internal fires cause the armor plates along its back to glow red-hot when the creature is particularly angry, excited, or in pain. Creatures adapted to arctic regions are often particularly vulnerable to fire, making the remorhaz's primary defense an incredibly potent one and securing its role as a dangerous predator in such frozen reaches.

What happens when the party only attacks with non-magical ranged weapons like arrows? Will the arrows/weapons do damage since the arrows will take more damage from the Remorhaz than the arrow can do?

The Exchange

Since the heat damage is inflicted when the weapon strikes the remorhaz, I believe the implication is that weapon damage is calculated, and then the ammunition involved takes 8d6 fire damage (in other words, bursts into flame/melts).

The use of the word strikes is (at least in the thesaurus) synonomous with 'hits'. The recent FAQ ruling in relation to 'deflection' seems to indicate that only a missile that actually does damage takes the fire damage. Of course, if you rule that a missile that hits the remorhaz's touch AC still bursts into flame, I doubt many players will be so attached to their spent ammunition that they'll challenge you on it.

The attack deals damage even if the weapon/arrow/bolt is destroyed as a result.

Thanks and your thoughts make perfect sense.
